US Coastguard require an absorbent material or a removable tray under a marine engine for environment protection from pump-out.

A scatter cushion would be ideal. It would last for months before it needed chucking overboard.

Okay, so that the scatter cushion function, what are the other functions of the scatter cushion?

Great for kneeling on when working on the engine. Useful for padding locker space so things don't fall around. With rope tied around, they can be used as emergency fenders. The possibilities are only limited by one's imagination.

Thank you, I have an imagination, I was really wondering what cunning other purpose Searush had for scatter cushions, apart from lounging against with different covers. In fact this may be worthy of a thread drift. What else can you use a scatter cushion for.

I'll add to your list of 3: MOB markers, plugging holes in the hull, soaking in oil for burning tar barrel substitute.

Thank God for that !

I hope no foreign types see this thread, or now when they see a British boat come in they won't be thinking of Jack Aubrey and Nelson, it'll be Laura Ashley and Homebase !

I hate the things, on shore or boat; ex-SWMBO made some very good looking ones as a hobby, but all they do is stick in one's back and ruin a comfy chair; you have more chance of finding Kiera Knightly on my boat than a ******* scatter ******* cushion !

That Kiera is a bit of a skinny lass. Probably the sort that needs a few scatter cushions to get comfy.

Far too many, about 6, I think. Always in the way when I need to lift seat cushions to get at toolboxes and other essentials. I am seriously thinking of "teaching them to swim".

The foreigners are the worst! Just look at the number of scatter cushions in this Beneteau brochure... http://www.beneteau.co.uk/var/beneteau/storage/ftp/fichiers/Voile/gammes/Oceanis/oceanis%2034/B_oceanis34.pdf

I was thinking more of .......

A seraglio would be proud of such a collection!

SWMBO buys fabric in each country we visit and makes a cushion as a memento - so we have a few, and teaching them to swim would involve the loss of several of my more important appendages.

IIRC this subject was treated in depth several years ago, although ym didn't deem it important enough to warrant an article I\t created quite heated discussing as you can imagine.I personally have 6 in a 27 footer I assume in 54 footer one would need 12
