John Rodriguez has what looks like a very tidy Scanmar 40 for sale, I keep looking at the ad and thinking I should go view. Price looks sensible. Size, spec and layout look good. Well equipped. No evidence in fact of anything to put us off.

But. Not a boat I know at all. Yard no longer in existence. Anyone out there got one or know one? What to look for?
 
I reckon that Scanmar 40 sums up everything I adored about 1980s cruiser-racers.

A trifle cramped, as might be expected within such perfect exterior lines.

But I don't know how an interior within that space could be more appealing.

Sympathies to the sellers.

Well, yes. Not cramped really, at 40'. Gorgeous lines. But a smaller interior than we wanted, so a great boat for someone else :)

I liked that Contest too but probably want slightly bigger now in retrospect, but a lovely looking boat,

Hi all, sorry for hijacking this post. I am searching for info on Scanmar 35 boats, and instead of a new post I read old ones first and am trying to get some more info here.
Basically, I'm looking at a 1985 Scanmar 35, indeed with aft cabin. My main questions:
1- Is this more a coastal cruiser or an ocean going cruiser?
2- What do I need to pay attention to before buying?

As the owner of a 1983 scanmar 35 for the past 11 years I can offer the following. Any boat built after 1984 was not built by the original boatbuilder (please check details are available online) Original boats from 1982-84 were built to high spec to compete with halberg rassey and najad. unfortunately lack of sales and money probs led to sale of company and new company started to cut costs. ie made savings on quality. I have seen first hand a 1985 model scanmar 35 and duly noted the differences in construction. My preference was for the original production model but please do not think I am trying to put you off a later model. I my opinion these are very well built boats and sail extremely well especially offshore. There are of course limitations compared to modern accommodation but if you want a caravan on the water go for modern. If you want a proper sailing boat well!!!
By the way we still enjoy racing and beating the najads and hrs.

I have had my 1984 Sc33 since 2005. The boat has been a good choice for our type of sailing - mainly coastal., She is seakindly, balanced, fast and a delight to helm - Whitlock rack & pinion steering. Good cockpit layout for single/shorthanding. Tall rig, fractional so good for fine tuning. The Isomat rig is sturdy overall but the spreader roots are welded to the mast so check carefully for any signs of cracking/stress. The boom is rather light in section. We like the aftcabin, some dont. The main cabin is quite roomy given the beam which is limited by more modern standards, but the stowage would be greater in some other 33 footers. Stories out there about chainplate failures and bilge/keel flexing but I have not seen any issues there. At 33 years of age most boats will need some upgrading. The decision points for me were primarily fractional rig, cockpit layout, steering system, aft cabin, engine access. Happy to answer any questions.
