What do you think about this boat:sail performance, building quality...Which price for a 24 years old with quite all original on the boat.Do you know if the hull is solid laminate or balsa core. Thanks

Never sailed one but an aquaintence had one. He was very pleased its sailing performance and didn't mention any major issues-build quality was good. He had it for quite a while-swapped it for a Dehler 34.

I bought my Scanmar 33, Sweet Lucy III rather by accident when I was looking for a Westerly Fulmar. I wasn't all that keen by my SWIMBO and my sailing partner's wife both fell in love with the huge interior, particularly the saloon, heads and galley.

I knew the boat sailed well from an earlier boat test but I was still amazed by her sailing manners. She is one of the best balanced 33ft cruiser racers I have ever sailed and a real delight on the helm though she has a strange quick which makes her difficult for wind vane gear to sail with the wind abeam. In speed terms she is quick and still competitive round the cans with good sails and updated gear.

The hull and deck were well built - balsa cored. The oriiginal rig was a bit underspecified and several of the early boats lost their masts including Sweet lucy. However, a factory upgrade and retro-fit of stronger chainplates solved the problem. Any boat you buy now will either have been built properly or have been upgraded.

Other general problems include:
The aftercabin bunk, which is huge, and can be slept on at sea either fore and aft when beating to windward or athwart when running, is reached through a low, keyhole door and lacks stowage.
The joinery throughout is light and not up to usual Swedish standards.
Stowage throughout is no more than just adequate
The chart table is on the small side, aft facing and lacks space for instruments.
The companionway descends over the engine box and when well heeled on starboard, getting below is a bit of a scramble.
Rudders have a tendency to delaminate.

This may sound like a damning catelogue but I am being deliberately hard on the boat. In fact I loved her for the five or six years I had her. The best thing was her sailing performance and the wonderful spaciousness of the saloon which will make you the envy of your friends - even those who sail Oceanises and Sun Oddites.

PS Sorry, nearly forgot - price: Sweet Lucy was, I am ashamed to admit, a little run down when I sold her last year. She went for £24,000 which I though was about £5,000 below the price a well-equipped, fully together Scanmar 33 should fetch today

Fine durable well mannered boat that is a delight to sail - if you can find one in Europe at sub-Scandinavian prices. Good ballast ratio. Stepped stub/keel joint to minimise grounding damage to Swedish specification. Deep bilge. Skeg rudder. Whitlock rack and opinion type steering - no cables, excellent response, almost as good as a tiller. Spacious for a 33 footer of its generation with large aft cabin but without resulting on a broad flat transom. Fractional rig, powerful but suitable for short/single handing aided by sensible cockpit layout, 4 Lewmar 40 st winches as standard, two within reach of the wheel as is the mainsheet. Excellent engine access - useful in an older boat. Hot water system and fridge were standard fittings I think. Joinery is attractive, quality is fine and lasts well if looked after. Good size berths all round. Galley is well laid out and good at sea. Maintenance points accessible.

I had a Scanmar 35 for 2 years until I sadly had to sell her. She was centre cockpit with full aft cabin. She was the similiar otherwise to the 33. She was great to sail. Had lovely sleek line and was fast.

Once when trying to get through the racers at the Scottish series on Loch Fyne got in among them and started passing them. They were flying spinnakers and were all agape as we were also towing a hard dinghy, the dog was sitting on aft cabin watching proceedings and I had drink in hand. Eventually had to spill the wind to let them pass.

Scanmar 33 rub rail

Hi James- live in Pennsylvania an my new Scanmar 33 project boat lives on the chesapeak. Im looking for rubrail to replace an existing bad section and also a station holder would you know where I might find these items. Any clue would be beneficial as I have had no luck.

thanks

Mike

?Station holder = Stanchion base?
Try Goiot, I think they may have made the originals or made a similar unit
