Just read a review of a mountain bike with a frame made from aluminium (It's not unusual ©Tom Jones) alloyed with scandium (now that's unusual). Quoted advantages over plain vanilla ali include much higher strength allowing sections to be thinner.

Anyone heard of Scandi-Ali spars being built?

Little is yet known about the toxicity of scandium; therefore it should be handled with care.

Quite suprised that the prices were not over the top. There's a bike shop in Kendal with bikes at £2300 in the window. My boat/trailer/engine/new sails didn't cost that.

Titanium

I have a ti-frame mountain bike, which was not that expensive as I bought it to ride when I was living in China (clue - China, in the days of Mao, thought that titanium was a strategic metal - consequently they have plenty to make bespoke bikes out of...China has quite an active handbuilt bike industry as well as the mass production places. )

There are such things as titanium shackles, used on very posh offshore racers, but I've never seen a titanium spar.

The bike is probably indestructible, but it's not as nice to ride on the road as the 28 year old 10-speed Mercian Vincitore, which gets all sorts of admiring comments from old gits like me!

Oh, yeah, decent components.

Nobody ever buys a frame with decent components. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You get the best frame you can possibly manage (see "Titanium") and hang cheap components off it cos you are now skint, and you plan to change them later. EG my Mercian is 28 years overdue for some brakes that will actually stop it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

the reviews of Poshbikes says you easily spend up to£25k

on one have a full carbon for£2k that looks the dogs

makes my Marin seem cheap

cheers Joe
