Hi,

I just wanted to get your thoughts on how long it should take for a scam advert to be removed from a boat listing site? I reported a scam advert on Boatsandoutboards.co.uk yesterday (I gave them details of the advert and the site I was directed to 'to make a secure payment') but I have had neither a response nor seen that the advert removed. The fake payment site has already been closed down by the hosting company (although I'm sure it will just spring up somewhere else) but boatsandoutboards do not seem to be bothering.

I would have hoped that a business that makes it's money hosting adverts for people would jump on their sites being used to defraud people very quickly. Or do others not see this as being as serious as I do?

They don't seem to give a toss :( There are hundreds of scam adverts on almost all sales sites for boats, caravans & cars etc.
Put the link here or PM me it & I'll report it as well.

Yes, it is serious but I'm afraid it's not unusual and it's a growing problem.

There are now a number of scams operating aimed at both boat buyers and sellers, but most are unsophisticated and fairly easy to spot. With the growth of the internet as an advertising medium for the boat market, the scammers play the numbers game and don't need many 'hits' to succeed.

The old adage applies: if it looks to good to be true, it probably is.

Not too sure if that rIght , there some very good bargain about , but I think most people will spot very quickly if there a scam going on ,
just double check every thing and don't part with your money until you seen and had prove the good are the seller to sell .

Scam text on a Westerly Konsort advertised for £5,600

I saw an advert in BOATSHOP 24 for a Westerly Konsort at £5600 in the Swansea area. The photograph showed the correct boat but with some signs of damage along the starboard side so I sent this message as I was thinking about buying a "project boat"

EMAIL TO ADVERTISER.

Can you confirm the extent of the repair carried out on the stbd side and also confirm the asking price. Has the boat been subject to water ingress though the damage, ie water entry into the engine Many thanks

Regards

Hi, I was away to my mother in law and I just got to a pc and saw your email.

This boat its just perfect, Immaculate condition, no damages, once with the boat you will also get all the equipment my husband had, it also includes the trailer. All necessary documents available. I just moved back to Dundee after the death of my husband(I was left with it and a big mortgage due next week). Price £ 5600 delivered at my costs. I will list the boat on eBay Motors and I will send you a link to my auction, so you can buy it. The engine was serviced in march . I don`t really know what to do with it and since I need to pay my mortgage I need to sell it. As soon as you will confirm the payment to eBay, I will proceed with the delivery without any additional costs for you.You will receive the boat with all the documents. As you know eBay is the best company of online transactions. If indeed interested in buying it and have the funds, I will list it on eBay, as I have a 100% positive feedback with them.
Please let me know your decision.
Thank you

The big problem for myself is that the previous buyer tried to stuff me with fake notes and that made me very aware of dangerous buyers. I would prefer to list it on ebay through the money back guarantee program. Its a program that protects both the seller and the buyer. When I list it you will receive a notification from them that you are accepted or not and all the instructions that you need to follow. When you click on buy now a full set of instructions is emailed to both of us. Payment instructions for yourself and delivery instruction for myself. You will have to pay ebay and they will hold the money until you receive and accept to keep my item. When you receive it you will have 2 options to decline it or to keep it. If you decline to keep it you will just receive a full refund since the money will never leave the secure ebay holding account(same refund applies if by any chance anything happens with the delivery and the item is not delivered) Or option two and the most probable one you say YES i do want to keep it and ebay forwards the money to my account. Delivery will be payed by me and made through shiply.com they are partners with ebay. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received it. I just need your ebay id so I can send you the link through ebay.
Let me know if this is acceptable.

Thank you

I notified BOATSHOP 24 and they withdrew the advert.

Same scam here - they take you off to a badly copied ebay site where the buy now button gives you instructions for making a bank transfer. It is a Barclays account (apparently it is easy to get an account with them and most of the scams use them, and if you pay they whip the money out straight away). Just to be clear here, I did not fall for the scam and had a bit of fun baiting the guy at the other end. The fake site has been removed already but boatsandoutboards still have not removed the ad.
