SC5616 - a disappointment

Last month I bought a copy of SC5616, the Ardnamurchan to Shiants lesiure folio (2nd edition). I was seriously disappointed when I got to the the narrows in Loch Nevis. The chart stops there. No coverage of the eastern part of Loch Nevis past 5deg 36.86W. That's about 3 miles of loch uncharted.

It's especially annoying that the diagram on the front sheet (which you can see here ) seems to show coverage of all Loch Nevis and the index, sheet 27, shows a panel 5616.3C covering it.

After lengthy correspondence with UKHO, they admitted a mistake. They intended to leave it out but forgot to remove it from the diagrams (it was included in the first edition). They don't plan to restore it in the next edition due about new year. To quote Lynne Truss, "That is a disgrace."

I think you are reminding us of Liz Truss' cheesy concerns. Lynne Truss is the punctuation pedant.

Have you had a look at Antares charts. I know this is not the answer to the problem which I think is definately a legal issue - probably trades description and whilst we are still entitled, European Court of Human Rights. As you are now in receipt of State Pension, I'm sure there will be legal aid to support you.
Might I take the liberty of referring your case to my Solicitors, Messrs Hunt, Lunt and Cunningham of Invercockaleekie suggesting they proceed on a no win no fee basis?

Derek, you're not missing much,,,,,

WE went into the inner loch some years ago, pre-leisure folio, using the big charts (always second hand from chartsales.co.uk); it's a bit desolate and gloomy, at least that was our feeling. Also steep sided and we found it difficult to anchor effectively so decided to go back out to Tarbet Bay for the night.

There's another odd thing about SC5616, the sheet numbering, with sheet five being on the back of four etc. I did wonder at the time whether we'd accidentally bought counterfeit goods, but that seems unlikely. It's just a badly made up set of charts.

All the small craft folios I have used have been a pain like that. I used them because they fit my chart table, but I resent the lack of overlaps and I resent the lack of small scale ... erm, large scale ... no, wait, maybe it's small scale ... hang it all, larg ... no, small ... oh hell, charts covering a larger area which I can use for planning. [1]

I think they are designed as a legal fig leaf for people who use a plotter exclusively but need to carry paper charts somewhere.

[1] I now use Imray C-series for that.

Use navionics, just checked on it and seems to have the charts! Dons asbestos suit and sidles to the door!

As does the Memory-Map bundle of over 800 UKHO charts.

Don't worry too much about us; we had Navionics and Memory Map and Antares but no paper for the last bit.

We stayed overnight but I agree the side is steep and it was a challenge to get the hook down comfortably. Don't agree about gloomy though.

News from UKHO:

"You contacted us in June regarding ADMIRALTY Leisure Folio SC5616, and the missing panel 5616.3C Inner Loch Nevis.

You may be interested to know that a new edition is being published in February and the panel has been included within the next edition.

Have a lovely weekend.

Well done sir for getting the UKHO to correct this oversight.

Have they fixed Loch Ryan, which was omitted from my first series of the relevant Admiralty folios - neither on the NW England nor the Clyde one. Which was a tad inconvenient when the electrics went down and we had to head in at midnight with no chart plotter - to discover no paper either (days before Navionics in iPad and Phone)

Ouch. Discovery of the Wig under such circumstances could be character building. At least the channel is buoyed all the way to Stranraer, though that may not last with no commercial traffic.

I'm sure those big dolphins on the way to Stranraer will take a while to rust through, albeit by the time you reach those you've passed the main hazards. Buoyage is a bit scarce for the part where you generally keep between the channel and spit to let the ferries play in the deeper water.

Maybe they could cede it to Northern Ireland as they've done with Portpatrick.

Pester them at customerservices@ukho.gov.uk

My experience is that they always respond, but they don't rush to change anything. But eventually it seems they relent and put things right.

Thanks. Before pestering them about the Loch Ryan gap, I would have to check whether they have already addressed it.

I have to admit that my Admiralty Folio was current at the time, but has not been updated since and is at least one version out. Had been thinking about updating, but the boat is somewhat further to the East at present.
Does anybody have a current Clyde Folio to check
