Hi all,

After recently getting my paper charts up to date, they are now at the state where they will never match the weekly updates applied to the chart plotte, or on that of my iPad Navionics App. Some of the notice to Mariners also say to take "caution" when using certain charts as they will not be up to date until the latest edition releases... Great eh?

QUESTION:

Currently, I plot a course on the charts, then add my headings, distances and notes to my logbook, which I use to navigate keeping an eye on my chart plotter for any dangers along the way, but with no waypoints or line route on the plotter.

I am so enamoured with the Navionics app, that my question is, could I skip marking up the paper version altogether and use the waypoints I calculate on my app (sometimes while on the plane or taxi!) to write in the log, and then as a precaution also enter into the plotter as a route.

I would still have the charts to hand in case of emergency and for reference, but I would be using the Navionics app with its route safety protocols to work out my route and waypoints.

I am also competent with the chart, and should the electronics and the iPad fail (Independence Day style EMP type situation), I would be able to work of them.

Final point; As I update my plotter on each visit, the electronic charts would always match.

Thoughts and advice please Mobo'ers!

I doubt that many people draw and plan routes in the excruciating detail you describe as your current practice :). Talk of planes and taxis implies that the boat is in the Med? In such benign waters I can't imagine that anybody does so...

Edit - just noticed the 5600 folio, so we're talking about the Solent. Well, it's basically a lake, so it's not like you're going to get lost :). Ensure you know where the Brambles and Ryde Sands are and you can't go too far wrong.

Pete
