Back from an enjoyable day at SBS yesterday. As a Southampton Boat Show virgin I was, naturally, blown away by the Sunseeker crew, who lounged, shades twinkling in the sunlight, around their shag-piled enclosure like Mafiosi on their way to bling heaven. I've never seen anything like it, and half expected Don Corleone to appear at the top of the stand with an arm wrapped around the shoulders of a resurrected Liberace, resplendent in a cape made from sequinned ensigns. Do people *really* buy boats like that..? Reckon I'm in the wrong business: extortion and racketeering must be way forward.
As I said I would, I went and visited the Midget 31, and was delighted by both her and her owners. You were right Ken, lovely chaps, (who remembered you by the way) though you did get something wrong: you said we should check out their beer cellar. They have, in fact, three: one for Belgian, one for French and one for Dutch beer. A more civilised way of surviving on board I couldn't imagine. And the boat is just wonderful, 31 feet of Dutch chunky goodness. I was certainly not the only admirer and I was heartened to see so many people wanting a boat that looked, well, a bit different...We talked about boats which could stand up to pretty much anything you could throw at them, and Mike agreed that the Kingfisher certainly fell into this category. He'd sailed them before and told me a wonderful story about one K20 which had been beached accidentally. There was only one way of getting her back into her natural element: take down the mast and roll, yes, roll, her down the beach into the water. Which they did. She suffered a couple of very small scratches on her topsides, got her mast back and off they went. Always a relief to know your boat can survive a good roll down a beach, I suppose.
Anyway off to start plotting ways of raising the cash for said boat...all suggestions gratefully received. Or should I just go wild and get an Island Packet 520..?
Pip pip.
