.......... a discussion yes ... that was to do with other matters

Why do you mix two different issues ?

The Group was set-up way back to assist people to get started with GPS / PC based nav ... and it got lumbered into Chart swapping etc.

The original conversation with Kim was about whether a forum could be maintained on YBW for answering all the GPS queries that come on here ..... Kim in fact had offered post only space - which was not really suitable at the time ... that was why Yahoo was chosen ... free and with archival space.

You I don't remember ... but its more than possible - because there were a few offers and discussions going on about server space and hosting etc. It all got out of hand and I made the decision to keep them separated and maintain an archive facility via Yahoo ... which proved useful to members and also the very Commercial Interests that closed the original "actions of members" .....

As Kim is aware - the actual reason for not taking up the YBW offer was lack of server archive .... LATER when the Copyright issue broke it was already decided basically ....

We still return to why you call a Yahoo Group designed as a Archive and database a competitive forum ? If it helps another why not ? As said already - I have no problem with one helping the other .... eg Crewing carries the database and permanent archive .... there is little actual posting going on there ..... GPS Nav carries archival material and actually little posting goes on there except specific GPS related questions that get answered by Commercial interests as well as users ... Searider group is for Searider / Sunrider Owners specifically carrying archival data for renovating / improving the boats ....... PBOMeet sprang up because of the shut down of the YBW forums - it kept going as a group because it was there ....

The fact is none of them have detracted from anyone as members or not posting on YBW. Blimey - if that was true - then why the hell do I bother to answer stuff on here ? I would spend all my time on them instead ....

At end of the day - I'm not "Marion" ... and never will be and I don't like being tarred with that brush ...

I like it ... Tome ....

I keep seeing adverts for these new game things ....

Surely you haven't got one ????

Re: .......... a discussion yes ... that was to do with other matters

I'm not mixing any issues up, I was just correcting your statement

"KIm and I talked about Fuel Forum .... not Navigation ..... "

Re: .......... a discussion yes ... that was to do with other matters

Now I would like to see a club for smaller boat owners and have meets etc, but for small boats, thinking of me personally, the meets wouldn't be particularly easy. Its easy enough to say we'll meet at IOW for example, but for a small boat in the westcountry that is a very long way and not something that I would entertain.

I wouldn't see any point in having an alternative forum for small boat owners only... you can pick up all the information on here, albeit that some of it may be a little bit OTT, but whose to say that wouldn't happen on the other forum aswell.... a 30ft boat could easily be worth 10s of thousands and the owner could still have 000s to spend on it.

The yacht club to which I am a member is excatly what I like. Everyone is equal, there isn't anyone whos got the big posh very expensive brand new cruiser, in fact I think the biggest is about 24ft, so we are already a small boat club with about 30 to 40 boat owners who have club moorings plus others on the river.

I can see the advantages of small boats meeting and enjoying time together, especially as if you were with larger boats you would almost without doubt be left behind and then it becomes a chore to get to the end... at least if you were all the same you could cruise together.

So club yes... forum no.

Re: .......... a discussion yes ... that was to do with other matters

nothing wrong with organizing rallies for small boats in locations not suitable for larger boats but why start a whole new forum for it.

The proposed forum could be more accurately called Small Yachts close to the Solent .its not going to be much fun for the rest of us reading about events we are procluded from by distance.OK perhaps we could drive down and crew for someone but that will be the limit of involvement for anyone more than a days sail from the Solent.

Re: .......... a discussion yes ... that was to do with other matters

....and what about those of us that live here, I'm not interested in any rally on the Isle of Wight - I can throw a stone at Newport Town Quay /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yes, there maybe support for your idea but surely it can all be achieved within the YBW forums? And if it can't be then it's up to you to go it alone rather than leaching off YBW's successful well managed baby.

[/ QUOTE ]

it does seem a bit of a poaching exercise though hopefully anyone who joins up to Nigels new forum would still remain active here as well.

Personally I think the idea is divisive. Theres nothing stopping anyone organising a rally anywhere they like in places suitable for small boats but why split completely from YBW?

The attraction of YBW forums for me is the wide range of people, boat types etc.

Could it be the small number of regular posters who seem to own the forums.

Or the self appointed experts who will knock the slightest error made by another postee.

Those who take over sensible threads...

Some of the reasons, why I have given up posting.

The next line in the original post before it was cropped was: "Perhaps some of us are just too sensitive?"

I think that is the crux of the matter - it is a free for all.

If you can't join in or want a nice safe non confrontational place, perhaps the internet is not the place for you. No one can control what you say so why try and control them with the shrinking violet card?

Re: Rude or Wot!!!

I think that about sums it up. All sorts meet and gather on ybw, and setting up outside forums seems divisive and against all that ybw has come to mean over the years. I'm totally against it, in case anyone hadn't noticed yet! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Rude or Wot!!!

I think it is a great idea too.

I am quite sad about some comments in this thread by people suggesting they have been alienated. I have always thought PBO has always managed to self regulate.

There are some who miss the point of the forum suggesting paying a man to do it for almost any fault, but they are vastly outweighed by people who do get their hands dirty each weekend.

Advise comes in two stages normally..

The correct, by the book, way and
This is how I got round it type.

Which is excellent, you should never cut corners without knowing what you are cutting. sorry drifting.

The one thing I would say to any lurkers apparently scared to dip a toe, deep breath, jump in, the forum is getting a little stale of late, new blood needed. We particularly need a wood expert and GRP pro. Applications sent to, well here, come on everyone, big and small.

I was very polite in my reply, I just happen to disagree with your motives. Please to not try to get the upper hand by using belittling nicks, I did not call you Nigeyboy or the like.

This may seem petty to many people, but on internet forums this behaviour would often see the removal of the responder, it is a serious trolling tool and in this environment I find it offensive.

Re: Oh Dear .... Doggie and his bone

I'm coming in very late on this one ( no surprise there ) and the few things that come to mind are , why limit to sail only , a mobo can help a sailboat just as much as the opposite , and , this isn't the only active boat forum I participate in , so what's the problem with another one . YBW is not the only place where things happen on the water . I'm involved with a forum where some of the worlds most powerful boats are discussed , and used , but don't cost a fortune to buy . Life would be easier if everything was in one place , but it isn't , so another forum for smaller boats ? , why not . My one question is why just sail

"- it is a free for all. "

The internet is a great place... freedom of speech is a great thing....

But surely an organised forum shouldn't become a free for all?

Shrinking Violet? I'm happy to be familiar with anyone who sticks to basic manners and politeness.

I'll even talk to Nigel... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No one can control me?

Hmm lets see...

Jim you [--word removed--]

Jim you fecker

Oh....... I've been controlled...

Jim

I for one would like to see other locations ...

Who says that Solent is only place ?

What stops local rally's .... ?? Is it that Solent has more people looking for get togethers ?? I don't believe that.

When I did the YBW May BBQ - I hoped that it might spark of a few others in other locations ....

But again - One mans meat is another mans poison .....Sorry that we can't all agree.

Excellent idea Nigel. Not having an owners club for my 21 footer Fin it will be nice to chat to other small boat owners regarding dual function space saving ideas etc. It certainly won’t stop me from looking in on this forum which I find informative and entertaining.
As I’m an east coaster I will probably never make a Solent gathering, but there’s nothing to stop a few locals meeting up.

Re: Rude or Wot!!! Discussion was held in fact ....

Of Forum - discussion was held with respective parties .... on this very subject ....

It was agreed that the setting up of a YBW forum was not advised as hijacking and general mayhem would result. There was no way that YBW could administer such a concept nor could they provide the archive facility that was an important aspect. It is not first time and I am not first person to have had that answer.

I understand your post and appreciate your comments as your opinions and I respect that.

Unfortunately - Brendans perception and undertstanding has seriously dis-coloured the waters - such that fact is now getting distorted and blurred ....

It is a pity thaty questions are not asked before slagging off ...

Has no-one even considered that it be strange for such a strong supporter / postee on the forums to enact such perceived sabotage ???? Over many years - I have taken a lot of abuse .... soldiered on ... given my tuppence worth for free ... as a lot of others ...

I now find that threads are hijacked, threads are destroyed, threads are kicked and laughed at .... often by regular names that keep cropping up. I admire and support these fora and YBW probably a lot more than many realise ....
I am not looking for a fight .... I would like to balance the various .... YBW cannot do it - as editorial is limited to allow the fora to live and be wide ranging ... allowing certain people to ruin a vast store of knowledge and expertise .....

As to "leeching" off YBW .... that is really uncalled for - considering that I do not use these fora for commercial gain, I do not use these Fora to advertise e-bay auctions ... just to quote a couple of items .....

Everyon is entitled to their opinion .... long may it be so .... but really ... this thread has shown how bad it can get ....

Oh - My discussions with YBW will continue by the way on various items .... and I am sure that should I step out of line - I shall be told ......
