No problem Nigel, I stand corrected.

I'm a mobo (albeit a small and slow one!) at the moment, things are likely to change (sailing again tomorrow thanks to your crewing database)!
I'll probably leave joining this group until wind-powered. I can see the sense in keeping it sail only, although I see no problem with switching between disciplines and am baffled by the constant sniping from both sides.

But I'm new to this boaty lark.......
 
Nige is always trying to set up sites in competition to ybw. It's about time he left here and got on with his own sites if he thinks ybw is so inadequate

It is precisely the fact that camps have sprung up - the big-boat cliques and the small boat owner that the concept arose in conversation between like-minded people.
The forums themselves have often decsended into the larger boat millpond leaving the "smaller" end high and dry.

I don't care whether you join or not - what I object to is again a post that derides others efforts .... (I'm not accusing you of previous ......)

I think actually your post does a dis-service ... but that is my view. I apprecaite that others have managed to keep diplomatically quiet if they felt same ... but I suppose the door is now open - thank you DW.

I think this is a good idea IF the club actually provides some benefits to the members (apart from having a burgee to fly? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif), but I am not sure what these are likely to be especially as the biggest problem that I see is that by the nature of the vessels being "small boats" they are less likely to travel to get togethers (at least by sea).

30 Foot seems a bit big (Fisher 30?!), but I guess that you do have to draw the line somewhere.

The no fin keelers rule seems a bit strange, especially bearing in mind that most of your membership will probably never manage a real life meeting in YOUR area (will it be called a "Raid"? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif) but I guess that in other areas of the UK drying out is not actually such a requirement. I guess the thinking was that you didn't want the "modern racing" type boats. Maybe make the requirement that the vessel is "capable of taking the ground" (ie has legs.........with the meaning capable of being stretched to "could lean against the harbour wall")

I would have thought that the SBC should be promoting the benefits (Fun, cost and usability!) of small boats, not excluding half of them. (Bilge Keel Corribee ok, fin Keel version not? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif)

You obviously haven't understood the original post ... and it specifically mentions YBW and not in competition .....

We are talking about an On-line Virtual Club for small boats ....

I must apologise to you again in not knowing that you are the appointed Judge in all matters YBW ... Funny that ....

FYI - when the Forums collapsed back in the "good ol'days" - I don't remember you being part of the group that kept so many people still in contact and providing Kim with a nucleus of peeps to re-instate in the new forums ? I was and a very active part as well .....

I'm sure when I next chat with YBW staff - as I do .... that I shall be officially informed of your position. I shall then pass all posts via yourself for approval and editing ...........

On yer Bike mate ...... as I said earlier ... I hope that those who do not wish to join in - etc.
 
Length is not everything. An old 35' does not have the same internal space as a modern 30'. Ours has less water line length than a modern 30'. We certainly have a stubby mast in comparison. Small boats are a way of thinking not a dimension.

but yet again, you are setting up websites which appear to the uninititated (eg me) to be in direct competition to ybw. What do you hope to achieve there that can't be done here on ybw?


why should anyone need to be on ybw staff to be able to comment on your actions. It's the forum members that provide the material on these forums that keep them going, and any forumite should be able to comment on the actions of another forum member who is constantly setting up competitive forums, then advertising the fact on ybw forums.
 
Difficult decision ...

there is a wish to "control" membership .. as there are views on types and style of boats .... some mesh ok ... some don't. There is no specific wish to exclude a particular design of boat.
As said earlier - we are looking at venues that would make it difficult for some boats ..... as we want to try and widen the locations visited. But again ... application is open aslong as size is not compromised. We do not want a club to be influenced to larger formats than the smaller boats can do.

As to areas that boats are in and possibility to make meetings etc. That we hope will sort out by cross-crewing / boating .... as many boats have spare slots on-board etc.

It's early days and form will be guided by who joins in and who doesn't .... no-one claims to have the magic formula ....
 
The obvious (to me anyway) answer would be to ask Keith to setup another forum for small boats. Done and dusted then and you don't need to be a 'member' you can post as and when you wish.
Why start another elsewhere?

Historically I have been seen and shown that I am one of the biggest supporters of these YBW forums.
A prolific poster on many matters - especially when it comes to fuel / survey / navigation matters.
I have organised 3 meettings now that have had direct relation and link / connection with YBW .....
Where I have considered an idea could be brought into YBW - I have done just that .... Fuel Forum - originally I was going to a resident "answering machine" for fuel related problems etc. but it got forgotten .... Crewing forum to give a place that people could ask and look specifically ....

Now your claim that I have put together competitive sites is actually grossly unfair ... as they are specific and were with the idea to create archival material for anyone who joined - a fact that YBW forum cannot do.
GPS Nav - to bring together GPS companys and users, to upload / download data useful to all ....
Lowrance Plotter .... again a data / archive and users specific resource
PBOMeet - the grouping that put faces back into the later recreated forums ....
Searider Group - specific to my boat and sisters, same idea as Westerly Owners, Snapdragom O.Assoc etc.
Crewing group - permamant archive of details complimenting the forum on here ....

Brendan - I can spend my time on other things - I don't have to argue the toss with you or do what I do on the forums / other boating stuff .... I do what I do - because I love boating and I want to give to others as much as I can and give them opportunity as well.
I don't jump on others very often ... it's live and let live ...

To be honest - I don't know why I bother to explain myself ... I think I will just let others decide whether they consider it right or not .... by their action to join or not join ....

I am sure that every single person that joins will still be a poster on YBW .... as I am ...

Although I can't back this up with any hard facts (but this being the internet I fortunately do not have to worry about "facts" /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif), but I also get the impression from my time here that the solutions to problems tend to assume a somewhat unlimited budget and a willingness to spend it on boats that just won't ever be economically viable on Issues that may in the real world be largeley theorectical. Whereas in the real world the attitude can often be (for good or bad) "f#ck it, that's good enuf - we are only going around the bay".
 
I've got a 21' boat, but I've been exluded anyway. Why? It's a powerboat, and Nige only wants Sailboats according to his instructions for joining. Why not call it Small Sailing Boat Club and be accurate.
 
But there's the rub....

We can, and should, all learn from one another... challenges, problems and their fixes can pass easily up or down the boat size scale.....

Seperation is the wrong way forward IMHO..... isolationism will eventually destroy small boat contributions to ybw......
