Save up to 36% on a Christmas subcription

Popped into M&S in Richmond-upon-Thames lunch time today and the Christmas music was in full flow. Turned around and left without buying anything on principle.

Anyway, the offer means that's one of my presents sorted. Many thanks.

Does my direct debit subscription which was for MBM and was then transferred to MBY just keep going at the end of its current 6 months or does it stop?

Here in the Emerald Isle, the 'cheap' PBO print subscription works out at €7 a copy. It's cheaper (but still outrageous) to buy monthly in a newsagent. On a previous occasion I asked why so, when, for instance, a UK newspaper is actually cheaper here than in the UK, and couldn't something be done.

'Computer says no.' was the extent of the reply... I now only buy it if it has something I really want to read, so that's lost income. Madness.

Perhaps some influence could be exerted?

Indeed it is a problem and one that I have been trying to battle for 15 years but as its classed as Europe it has to be that price.

So yes my advice to all folk living there is to buy it from the newsagent.

Madness I know.

Thanks very much for trying!

However, I'd suggest that someone simply isn't paying attention. A glance at a map will confirm that there's a great deal of water in and around Ireland, and consequently a lot of boats! I looked at the December PBO this morning, at €6+, and thought - nope. If I had a subscription, at least some revenue would have been achieved. Amazon can deliver stuff here for nothing, and my UK newspaper this morning cost me €1.50 (£1.18) - or £1.40 if bought in the UK - so it can be done economically.

To whom do I write?

Hi ScillyBoy

I've raised this a few times over the years and unfortunately got much the same answer. In fairness the stupidness and lack of marketing knowledge is not Richard's fault nor MBY, PBO, YM staff, but incompetent management up the publishing food chain.

Ireland is an island with 1000s of miles of coastline and the market here speaks english. Nuff said if marketing numpties are too thick to do the maths and realise they could at least treble the subs here if the price was a simple currency conversion equivalent instead of the current rip off which is why few subscribe from Ireland and instead only buy 2 or 3 issues a year when browsing newsagents stands. These mags do not have to be distributed here only by 'newspread', nor rates artificially held high to protect any distro deals. Think outside the box and make a little more profit from greater market share and subscribers.

Noel

PS: Hope the mags have good spell checkers: (sorry couldn't resist) :)

Hi Noel,

Absolutely - glad I'm not alone..! I like the mags generally, and agree that the marketing problems don't lie with Richard et al. For my money, any marketing expert whose research suggests that the engish-speaking Irish boating market sitting out in the North Atlantic inhabits the same segment as, say, Luxembourg, should perhaps clear his/her desk asap, and I can only conclude that they must do this for a hobby rather than to make a profit. The problem is - how do we get the message to these people, whoever they are.......?

Tim.

Thank you for the kind words ! However I feel I must says it's not a marketing problem as we know how lucrative this market is.

It's more of a logistical problem and one we and the publishers re visit probably every six months but are told that's the only way we can do it.

The flip side is digital is cheaper.

Not the answer you are looking for I know !
