To cut an extremely long story short, We are fighting like mad to stop the local district council (based in Lowestoft) from firstly stealing all the revenue from the harbour for their general fund and lending some of it back to the harbour for works at 8% interest.
Their plan is to set up a limited company where they have 100% of the shares to manage and if true to form, try to sell off sections to private companies.

The fact they they do NOT own any of the harbour lands seems to be just a small inconvenience.
Also they have decided without any consultation to scrap the agreement that they signed up to with the town council, harbour users, businesses and residents in March 2015, where a trust would be formed consisting of a cross section of all parties to run the Harbour.

If you would like to help then please sign our petition at https://www.change.org/p/waveney-district-council-save-southwold-harbour

If you want to read the background and get the long story then see http://southwoldharbour.info/

Signed.

The original plan was a much better idea. I'd trust Waveney council about as far as I could throw them.

It would be a real shame for Southwold harbour to lose it's unique character.

Under the Localism Act, a Council has a duty to consult.
Also, a community can reauire a Council to hand over the running of various services if they follow the protocol.

Seems thus would be a fantastic opportunity to use the Act to take over the operation of the harbour.

PS would love to keep Tomahawk there, but as always, lack of space.

Southwold harbour is a wonderful place that should be in the hands of local stakeholders not a faceless council offshoot whose principal aim will be to generate revenue.

Just imagine the eventual development of "nice" harbourside houses/flats ruining what is one of the most unique places you can visit by boat in the UK.

Signed and best wishes for the petition.

You only have to look at the waterfronts at Brightlingsea, Wivenhoe, Rowhedge, Burnham, or Faversham to see what might happen if private developers were to get their hands on even a small part of Southwold Harbour.

The reason folk go to places like Southwold Harbour, by water or land, is that they are largely undeveloped destinations, hence the attraction.

Let's keep it that way and get as many people as possible.to sign this petition.
