Dont know about you guys but I'm fed up with Sat TV Pop this & Fame that shows. All started with that silly Pop star thing which spawned the awful Hearsay, where are they now?

Speaking as an ageing musician, in my day people with talent had to work there way up playing clubs pubs etc till they got the break. Then chances are those with real talent lasted, those that didnt faded.

The other point is whilst the winners may be able to sing a little they may as well call the new boys The Kareoke Boys cos all they do is sing along to a recorded backing. Take that away and their stumped. AND the likes of Divina Shout a lot,
keeps refering to them as "the new band" They are not a band they are at best a group. Dictionary definition of a band "body of musicians" i.e. people that can play music.

Got that of me chest thats better

otally agree with you Clive. Funny how you dont see people like Fergal Sharkey or other ugly dudes with talent. Thats cos its all image these days. Ended up watching said program with wife and saw Pete waterman saying that he prefers people with talent but commercially its pin ups people go for.

Agree with the band thing, when they play their own instruments they are a band otherwise they are glorified choir singers.

Funny how the losers to Pop stars Liberty x are selling more and putting out better stuff than hear say. Also Gareth is outselling Will. Its commercial rubbish but if thats what the people want.

I am boating again ;-)

Yer sad state of the times TOTP is a farce too just full of people in baggy trousers prancing about doing Kareoke thrusting their arms at the camera (you know the type I mean)
And of course all the "studio recordings" are done by the technicians on computers and samplers so all they need to do is capture one line on key sampled and then keep repeating that, i.e. Kylie early days could'nt sing just got "I should be so lucky" right once on to sampler, then she went home and left it to the techinicians.

I couldn't agree more.
Every programme seams to require the public to phone in with their votes, and hence make lots of money for the tv station, or it's some sad git supposedly looking for a date, when in reality all they appear to be doing is trying to get a free holiday.
Why is it, if they produce one successful programme, there are so many similar ones produced that we all get fed up with them? Don't they understand the meaning of the words variety and choice of programmes?

These shows and bog brither are IMHO total rubbish. I think that with the obvious talents of some of the contributers to this site a new programme could be developed "The Forumites" - an everyday story of boating folk, perhaps with some kind of karioke/fly on the wall slant.

CJN with his "band", B1 on the organ - this show could knock celebrity pop sh*** off its pirch........

All we need is some sponsership ..... brought to you by the makers of Soltron ......

Will telephone Channel Four to discuss.

Nick

I am nolonger a puppet.....

I'm under constraint from SWMBO not to discuss this topic under any circumstances, and I suspect that this applies to the forum as well, due to the damage I inflict to:

myself (apoplexy, high blood pressure etc),
others (damaged relationship with swmbo), and
things (anything with range)

I have been warned that if she hears this topic once more, my xmas pressie will be a soapbox, and I will be spending Boxing Day, and the rest of the festive season, at Speakers Corner! <s>

So, I shall be sitting here quietly applauding all who rile against this....<sound of plug being pulled>

in my day people with talent had to work there way up
Oh Yeh? wot abaht 'THE MONKEES' then.

Too right!

But it's not a recent thing. Elvis Presley would never have been discovered without the the approval of the Ed Sullivan Show. Also, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was purely a manufactured talent who used his Da's position as Hapsburg court musician to win the 1771 equivalent of New Faces.

Agree completely, I banish myself from the living room most evenings as the family feast themselves on a diet of complete and utter shite! Next thing apparently is a reality TV diet .. now that really promises to be rivetting!

Yes TCM but Elvis appeared on that show he was doing what came naturally and was picked presumably because the word got around, dont know all the facts just assuming ? With these shows they rush to the auditions to et a chance to be a) famous and b) make lots of money from limited talent.

Lets face it most of use can sing if we really try but, as I made the point before a "Band" is a body of musicians who have learnt their trade i.e playing and perhaps writing as a vocation. These people can in no way be described as a band. What I like to hear is hands on strings not computerised, sythesised prerecorded rubbish, made by technicians on large machines.

Manufactured yes, but individually they did have talent, and their music stands the test of time by being playable today, which cannot be said of many modern contemporaries

Besides,'Shades of Grey' is one of the most haunting songs ever played...people only ever remember a few of their songs

Disagree that Elvis was a musician! IMHO he was an overrated showman who could belt out a song. How many songs did he actually write himself?

True he was no musician or song writer and I personnally am not a fan but he seems to have had talent

God , what a bunch of sad old farts you lot are. Just read what most of you have written about today's music. I bet your fathers said the same thing and their fathers before them. IT WASN'T LIKE THAT IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS ETC ETC.
I happen to agree with you about the new Reality TV craze however - nauseating voyeurism, and unfortunately without the sex!
Back to the Horlicks.

There's a lot of good new music around today, and many talented people. The problem is that the whole music industry is geared around manufacturing good looking kids with little or no real talent into 'idols' by using expensive marketing to sell lifestyle images to gullible teenagers.

The people with true talent who don't have perfect teeth and stunning bodies don't get a look in, with the odd exception.

Nothing sad nor old about these opinions. I still go to listen to live music whenever I can, same as I've always done. There does seem to be a general backlash against manufactured pop bands, and this can only be good for the quality of music in the charts

IMHO etc
