A Princess 33,same as my old one but this time nice simple cheap easy to maintain shafts.
A Powles 33
A Powles 37
A P37
and something a bit usual in Essex Boatyards.Plus some other stuff if any time left.

Thats the local stuff,after that theres boats in Ireland,Scotland and the odd one or two in France.

Charlotte Trood, a Storebro Royal is down at Thames Boat sales, vastly reduced and a really lovely looking thing!

The further you travel. The worse the boat will be.

Have just travelled 600 miles to look at some of the most overpriced grubby bashed up heaps in the known universe.How on earth anybody can allow any boat to get into that condition and then actually ask money for it beats me.
The three that we got to look at could only be described as "restoration projects"
We drove past the Broom outfit,never seen so many shiney mountains of white plastic with "For Sale" signs in one place before.:).
The search goes on tomorrow .
Will have a look at the TBS brokerage.

So where have you got to? Your place to Brooms can't be more than 300 miles round trip?
 
Should you, perchance, be far from home and have spent the night a la B&B, then I do hope you will find the 'Full English' sets you up nicely for the day.

Unfortunately, on our little foray down to the south west a few weeks ago, the B&B was not the best I've stayed at but, 'quelle horreur' I had to actually request two eggs and, even worse, the mushrooms were of the dreadul tinned variety.

However, SWMBO stayed at the Grand in Brighton for a couple of nights last weekend, and assures me that even they served tinned mushrooms and, if anything, the B&B brekkie was better :(

We would appear to have been luckier on the boat front though as both those we went to see turned out, if anything, to be in even nicer condition than the pre-information and photographs suggested.

Anyways, a good brekkie and what looks like being a much brighter day than yesterday may make today a more fruitful experience.

And don't panic - there's lots of support and maintenance assistance activity looming for my new toy shortly - what the hell is a 'trim tab' anyway?

I know where there is a nice P33 with 80Hp Mermaids on Shafts....PM me if you are interested?
 
In case you are not kidding. A trim tab has the same effect as an aileron on a plane. At speed you can bring your bow up or down. It has no effect at all at river speeds.

Pedantic mode: Ailerons control roll. Elevators raise or lower the nose.

However, what you are looking for is Elevons, as found on Concorde. Working together they raise or lower the nose, and differentially they control roll.

Jeez! Every boat I have owned since 1968 has Trim Tabs fitted as they can be invaluable at Sea but tickling along at 5 knots just doesn't put enough pressure on the fins. Are yours electrically operated or just immobile fins fitted by Hardy to keep the bow down at speed?

Oh Byron, how could you possibly think that I would be satisfied with immobile fins ?????? :(
Electric of course, little buttons to press and gaiters to change - time will tell but I will certainly have a little fun.

(Actually, I'm a bit miffed that you should think that I might not be kidding ..... )

I have no plans (or expectations) to get up on the plane at legal river speeds but I will be interested to see how much joy they bring in compensating for a slight list one side or t'other. Also, will they pick the back end up a bit if needed to get over shallow bits?

It's the forward looking sounder I'm really looking forward to playing with.

As already said they have diddly squat effect on trim at 5knts either longdituduly or side to side, however they do create some drag and this can be usefull on outdrive powered boats to stop them wandering about, they do firm up the steering quite noticebly. Never tried steering with them though, now have an excuse to go out play next weekend to see if it works :)
 
Can categorically say trim tabs do bugger all at river speeds. They do however make up for this at high speeds when there is a bit of a cross wind or ill balanced load. Its just a shame one of ours is much quicker off the mark than the other which leads to some interesting moments when attempting to get NC planing squarely!!

They wont do anything to lift the stern. You can lift your stern drives of course in shallow water and if that still isnt enough lift get someone heavy to stand on the bow.

Have now completely revised my attitude to outdrives,they are not 100% rubbish,only 99%.
....corse the fact the boat becomes virtually unsteerable with the outdrives up and may well send your U/Js grinding into an early grave.,is not worth mentioning....:):):).

Anywho,bit more luck on boat hunting on Saturday up in Essex,just a minor matter of how much.
