Satellite Phone

You're more likelly to get 9,6kb/s then those 60kb/s advertised for Thuraya's GmPRS. But 25-30kb/s will happen every now and then.
Iridium has 2,4kb/s but with the compression the real life result can be up to 10kb/s (unless you download stuff already compressed). But Iridium data connection is more expensive to use.

Also keep in mind that with Thuraya you can get the Thuraya IP which offers much better speeds, but is mighty expensive.

Personally I would advise sticking with the GmPRS unless you really need to download/upload videos and so on. And if you ever plan to take the boat to the Atlantic go with Iridium.

The Thuraya marine IP unit will not be ready until Q2, they reckon. The land version is available, but you would have to be relatively stable to maintain satellite lock.
