I went into Maplins recently and saw this Sat dish in a box, which claims to be able to pick up many channels for free.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48737&criteria=SATELIITE%20dish&doy=26m12
As it is portable could I take it to the boat and/or carvan and just use it ??

Can I get all BBC1/2 and ITV1 and Channel 4 and 5 as well as the freeview which I guess will be the normal freeview channels - do I need a sat freeview box as well or will I only get German Sat ???

anyone got any experiance of these

I asked them about it they sent me this as an attachment, but didn't say anything else.

From Maplin........

an old cancelled sky card will get you the FTV channels, I have 3 spare sky boxes and a portable dish, I could do with some old cards too, I only have one!!

I use one on the boat, needs a fairly stable boat but as Parglena weighs 35ton and is only used on rivers its not a problem for me.
No channel 4 or 5 as they are not yet free to air, has no slot for cards so a sky FTV card will be of no use, other than that a great little system.

Julian

you can get most (free to view) channels without any card in a sky box except channel 4 and 5 which are encrypted. The Sky Freesat card, which is one off charge of £20, gets Ch4/5 as well.

The replies so far here don't strike me as aiming at the right question: Will the dish pick up the signal? From a fixed spot - yes definately. But fixed on a boat? If a heavy canal boat moored on calm water - yes also. But on most of the boats we use, and more important, where they are moored? No, most unlikely I'd say - I have tried it!

I agree, I bought one to use in Holland this year, works fine, even though women watched eastenders /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Had to put dish on pontoon when windy.

The Multimo - about one third of the way down the page.
There are several others of this forum that use them.

Definately works and can be left up.
Plonk it down - point it at the sattelite - leave it.
Only good in port or at a fixed (not swinging) mooring.
Well worth the money.
Used it in France.
Avoids the need to get up early to listen to the shipping forecast at some ungodly hour.

I have a Kerstan dish for sale. Worked fine for all Sky channels but changed to a Raymarine dish as I wanted to use on swinging moorings, sad thing that I am ;-)

Could I clear this up please: Is it being suggested that such as the Multimo - or for that matter, Kerstan, dishes will still take a signal if these are plonked down on a pontoon or finger berth? I'd take a bit of persuading - but if you chaps say so, then I might be. Whenever I've erected a dish, it has to point directly at the Sat. Any wavering, and the signal would go. In a nutshell: Are these suggested dishes designed to allow for a degree of movement, as at a tied up berth, yet still get signals?

Thanks,

You'd be suprised at how much movement you can get away with. I use a multimo and very rarely have a problem getting a signal when on our berth. If its very windy from the wrong direction, then we sometimes get a problem as the boat moves - but this isn't very often.
