I am considering buying a sat nav for the car.

Our sailing has been mainly lake or coastal so far. We use paper chart and traditional methods in conjuntcion with a Garmin GPSMap 76 and its base map. I don't really have much wish to change this method but....

Has anyone come across or used a unit that would do for chartplotter on the boat, sat nav in the car, bluetooth handsfree for car. Possibly a PDA might fit the bill if so sugestions please.
 
I have a Dell Axim PDA which talks via Bluetooth to a GlobalSat GPS unit. It's programmed with TomTom for the car and Maptech Navigator Lite for the boat. All-singing, all-dancing plotter it is not but as a useful tool it works a treat.

I have a Navman PiN570 PDA with integrated GPS. It works quite well as a car sat-nav. I also have Ozi-explorer installed, to use with Maptech and scanned charts. This works very well, but the great weakness, probably of any PDA is vulnerability to water. The buttons, card slots, cable connectors etc are all wide open to the slightest amount of spray, or even wet hands. Also it doesn't run for very long on its internal battery. If I were buying again I would get a proper marine H/H GPS
 
Garmin GpsMap 276C with the optional car kit will do both car and boat, BUT better value to buy a 276C and a separate Nuvi 250, because the Nuvi is the same cost as the add on car kit for the 276.

The GpsMap76Cx handheld will also do both if you buy the City Navigator Europe CD add on in addition to the Marine charts for the area you want.

I might be mistaken but I don't think that unit will calculate a route from A to B like a car sat nav. Certainly my existing GPS MAP 76 won't, although would it? with some additional software and if so what? I have more detailed maps of areas but mine does not have a great deal of memory and can only load a region at a time.
 
The newer GpsMap76Cx or 76CSx will calculate car routes, but they have NO speaker and so wouldn't be my choice for car use, but ok for a bike. The 276C does marine and car, but again I'd prefer the 276C on the boat and a Nuvi 250 in the car. Same cost to have the two units as the one 276C with the additional purchase of the car nav kit. 276C is a bit bulky and cumbersome in a car too depending on the shape and sloap of the cars dash board.

PS: Or a Gpsmap 76Cx in the boat and a Nuvi 250 in the car.
 
Whilst I bought it for a motorbike rather than a car, the Garmin Quest was very good value, and waterproof. It can also use Bluechart as well as CityMap. Battery life is 12-15 hours, rechargeable, and I generally run the fag lighter plugged in under the bike seat or in the car.
