But you do get a free train ride back. On a fine day when you're not boating it can be nice to be 'offshore'.

I quite agree. But I can walk down Walton Pier for nothing. I have no objection to paying for the train if I want it, but I fancied a walk. I would even have been willing to pay a sensible amount - say under a quid. I walked down the seafront instead - for nothing.
