Sardinia - outboard engine insurance??

We've been told that it's illegal to use an outboard on a dinghy in Italian waters (Sardinia in our discussions) without specific stand alone outboard insurance. They don't accept the cover provided with Yacht insurance & that lack of the correct insurance leads to the outboard being confiscated and a large fine.
Can anyone confirm wether or not this is correct?

John mark you dinghy T/T [boat name] and stay within ½ kilometre of your boat and you should not have a problem. Engines over 9.9hp attract more attention. It might be worth asking your insurer to explicitly state that the o/b is covered by your yacht policy.
In Sardinia you might have more problems if you approach a beach with your tender. Local laws ban boats (unless they have permission for example a local boat hire business) and anchoring some distance from beaches and this law is enforced. So don’t risk riding over and landing your tender on the beach in Sardinia. We narrowly missed a fine and that was without engine just rowing the kids ashore to a beach.

Thanks Mike - good info.
I've checked my insurance and have a translation into Italian, underwritten by Lloyds Italy, which specifically mentions our tender, (which has a 3.5hp engine), so hopefully that covers us.

I have just checked my Pantaenius insurance documentation, it clearly states that I am covered for damages incurred by my boat and and use of my tender (s), there is no exclusion I can see for using an inboard or outboard engine on my tender (s) so I would think I am also covered.

It is correct if you get a very pedantic policeman in Sardinia. In the end I got my insurance Co to put on the uk certificate the make,HP and serial no of the engine.
They refused to put it on the Italian translation as this is a standard form.
The police accepted the wording about the engine on the uk certificate.
