Sardinia Charter

As none of you were knowledgeable enough to give me any advice on Charter Cos in The Canaries or Gib. How about waking up and telling me the name of any who have a base at/near Alghero in N.W. Sardinia. That's where the cheap flights land and I don't want to have to do the trek by road across to the Costa Smeralda on the N.E. coast in order to pick up a boat.

Thanks a lot. Just spent the last hour and a half browsing. Actually it appears that there are only 5 suitable boats available because the various different companies are offering the same boats.
Will go and browse at Excel Centre next week as well.

The largest choice is on the NE coast. I know it's a long way from Alghero, but we did it this year and caught the bus. It was a great trip - a 1.75 euro trip to Sassari bus station, then change to an air-conditioned coach (5.76 euro) for a really pleasant ride to Olbia Airport, taking around 1.5 hrs. Then cab (40 euro) to Portisco marina where there are loads of charter boats. Much better place to start as you're in the Madelana islands in a few hours. It takes around 4 hours in total, but get the early flight and you'll have plenty of time.
By the way, for the return journey we hired a car from Olbia airport for 80 euro and spent an easy-going day pootling back across the country to Alghero Airport.
Don't try taking a taxi unless you're very rich - you can hire a car for a week for less! Sardinia Car Hire from airport - 248 euro for 8 days, taxi - 175 euro each way!
We booked a night in a hotel (£50) in Alghero before we flew out - gave us a chance to see the town (pretty), unwind, and saunter along to the airport in the morning after a hot shower & brekkers. It costs no more for 8 days than 7 with Ryanair.

dont know anny charter outfit in alghero, only thing to rent is RIB's, so it looks like a pleasant trip cross country.

Thanks oh font of all knowledge - any idea what times the buses leaves Alghero ?/forums/images/icons/wink.gif Have you in your wanderings sailed up or down the West Coast of Sardinia ? If so, what's it like with regard to ports of call/anchorages. My pilot hasn't arrived yet.

west coast ok, but really the best coast is the east coast, which i have yet to traverse! The north and northeast corners are great a bit further down aswell. from all reports, i will be there next spring. buses dont know have a motorbike. but pretty frequent I would think i see enough of them!

You might want to consider flying into Olbia - you can get cheapish flights there also. It will save the transfer cost and give you a much better range of charter companies. Did this last year when we chartered from Kiriacoulis.

I would have chosen Olbia by choice but I can't find a purveyor of cheap flights to there from the Midlands or the North. From where and with whom did you fly ?

I chartered out of Alghero Sept 2003. One week got as far as Santa Teresa. Excellent sailing area ,i only had a week and really needed 2 weeks. Had to sail 85 miles on last day to get boat back ,via Fornelli passage which luckily was passable. Going again this year for 2 weeks. Used North Sardinia Sailing but they were not that good on maintenance,gooseneck fell to bits, and other faults. Charter co asked for report, but a friend of mine went out again 2 weeks later via Olbia and had same yacht,complete with same faults. Charter co wanted extra for the chip for chartplotter, and not much on board by way of charts. Oh, and 4 lovely new fire extinguishers. All still sealed in polythene and nicely stowed under nav seat!
