Current news story on PBO is a rescue off Brightlingsea, where a helo was hailed from Kinloss. Awfully long way. Are there no SAR helo assets closer to the E Coast than that?
Suspect the Helo was a service aircraft, as opposed to GC, and was called up by the Air Rescue Coordination Centre in Kinloss. Probably came from a much more local station.
Not even sure what ARCC stands for but above is an educated, well a guess anyway!
Good guess I would say. SAR is shared between the CG and the services. The RN cover that area from Culdrose or the RAF from Valley.
The centre at Kinloss is a co-ordination centre (there may or may not be an SAR located there but that would have nothing to do with the ARCC). ARCC could stand for Atlantic Region Co-ordination Centre but most service initials are designed to look good and confuse the enemy rather than convey information.

Guess spot on.....there used to be 2 rescue coordination centres in the UK NORMAR and SOUMAR...Northern and Southern maritime rescue coordination centres, these were based at Mountbatten in Plymouth and Pitreavie near Edinburgh. A few years back the Area Rescue Coordination Centre at RAF Kinloss took over the task and now covers the control of all Air recue assets....both fixed wing and rotary for the whole of the UK and a fair distance west over the Atlantic.
The press often make the mistake of sying the helicopter came from Kinloss, however the only remaining Nimrod squadron is based there.

I think the (rapidly shrinking) RAF still has SAR helicopters at Wattisham which would have been closest to Brightlingsea.

Correct. The SAR unit at Wattisham covers the SE at the moment. Big yellow choppers, usually known to us down 'ere on the CG as 'Rescue 125'.
Actually PBO didn't get it wrong this time, they will have got the report from the MCA website, which mentions Kinloss. I can't believe it came from there, though, would have taken hours.
