Sandtex vs. Deck Paint

I've used Dulux masonary paint with good results over Blakes deck paint which had chipped very badly. No complaints, excellent anti slip, colour mixed to my requirments.

In my experience many manufacturers won't recommend their products for marine use simply because they haven't tested them and don't want to get sued, so I wouldn't pay too much attention to Sandtex's statement. One supplier of an erstwhile deck caulking product that was used for years told me that they no longer recommend it for marine use in case someone uses it for a superyacht and sues them for £000's. I used it in my cockpit and it's great - and half the price of the equivalent marine product!

Maybe there's a theme - cost effective alternatives to rip off priced "marine" products - that's worth developing here on this forum!?

So tell us, what caulking product did you use?

I've recently been testing some Sika products that are available through B&Q at under half the price of Sika's marine products.

Purflex/Korapur. The name seems to vary according to what country it is packaged for though I believe it's the same product.

I seem to recall a tv advert many years ago where Sandtex was boasted as the paint used on lighthouses. Not a marine environment?!!

That's just how they market the brand now. There is a light house illustrated on the tin. So I guess it "does what it says on the tin"!

Dulux fine textured masonary paint

Have been using this for 12 years on my boat and the previous owner used a different brand of masonary paint (B&Q I think) before me too. No problems. Water based and dries in under an hour. Needs freshening coat about every 3 years. Only a thin coat is required. Don't apply to thick. If you need to sand any areas before repainting use a tungsten scraper first to remove the grit. Decant unused paint into big glass jamjars (metal tins rust quickly due to this being a water based paint) and it last forever (well, at least 9 years so far) so very cheap in the long run.

.... with 3 coats of Sandtex Oatmeal. Easy to apply and has a great finish!
