Sam\'s tactics.

Is Roxy going to loose 3rd place?

Have just been looking at the Vendee Globe position map with the wind icon enabled. Seems as if the 4th position boat is going to hook around the high pressure and into a downhill run, whereas Sam who is 340 miles east will be stuck with head winds. Or she could try to sail right through the high pressure and hope to pop out ahead of position 4.

What do you reckon the plan is?

Re: Sam\'s tactics.

Doesn't Marc Guillemot have some time in hand anyway, because he helped with the rescue of Yann Eliés?

Mind you, my theory is that her sponsors, Roxy, have instructed Sam to remain as becalmed as possible in warmer climes, so that there are lots of opportunities for photos of her wearing various items from their product line. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Sam\'s tactics.

I suspect that their respective courses were Hobson's choice really. Sam was quicker up wind so Marc had to do something different. He is much quicker (new boat etc) off the wind. Neither one could have beaten the other at their respecive 'own'games.
Makes for exciting watching and I expect that Twister Ken is leading the Sam fan club with palpatations!

Yup just Googled that. Sam has 32 hours of redress and Marc 82, so Sam would have to open up a 2 day lead. At present it is just over 1 day if we ignore her weather tactical disadvantage.

Oh well, the Frogs will still give her a massive welcome. I wonder of BBC TV sports coverage will even mention Roxy.

Re: Sam\'s tactics.

BBC and sport?????? BBC don't do sport (apart from the 6 Nations) anymore do they? In fact the UK as a nation don't do sailing (unless its the olympics) as such.

She'll have to depend on the French to give a hero's welcome. Back in good old Blighty, she'll get no mainstream publicity at all.

[/ QUOTE ] Just looked at the Vendée website. Marc states that, although he has the 50 hours' redress, he still wants to beat Sam home, fair and square. Sam has already said that she doesn't want to get a podium finish at the expense of someone else's misfortune. At the risk of sounding really corny, they will both be true sportsmen and winners, whichever one of them gets back first. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Marc G is stuck on 2nd reef

Oh so that explains their divergent courses, I had wondered why Sam did not adopt match race covering tactics.

Now keeping my fingers crossed that light headwinds develop for the final 600 miles to the finish line. This might just allow her arrive with 50 hours to spare.

Or more likely arrested by Health & Safety inspectors for dancing on the coachroof without a harness.

Re: Sam\'s tactics.

Nah - exceptions prove rules.

Surely even HSE would agree that a harness in that shot would have spoiled the profile and ruined the aesthetics?

[/ QUOTE ] Gotta disagree. Down the bottom of the UK, we ahve been getting regular news coverage on BBC South news programmes, including the videos direct from the boat.

Hopefully this will be elevated to national news during the weekend.

That reminds me I should set up my Sky TV box to default to BBC South so I can become a virtual Solent resident.

Re: Sam\'s made the turn.

Looks like Roxy has tacked this morning and is heading for the finish line at 10kts.

Meanwhile the yacht behind in 4th position is heading towards Canada at 4kts and seems to be stuck in the high that has drifted west. At this point it seems Sam could make the podium after the redress is factored in.

Re: Sam\'s made the turn.

Yep , I,ll second that . She is just as canny a sailor as the Frenchman , my money is on Sam , looking at the Vendee wind forecasts . anyone know what the bookies odds on Sam finishing in 3rd place are ? GO SAM !

Re: Sam\'s made the turn.

When I looked at the 'RaceTracker' earlier, she has about 285nm less to run than Marc in 'Safran'. Now that about a full day's worth of sailing at an *average* of 12 knots.

He's got problems of getting enough power 'on the wind' and is betting on a downwind and fast deep reach - his present course suggests that tactic. However, Sam seems to be following the track preferred by the first two, Mich and Armel, and if she pulls out a bit more speed advantage over Marc, she could well finish well before him AND be rather close to his 'corrected time'. So the Third Place is still to be decided.

Much depends on who will be able to make their tactic 'gain' over the other, in the winds they find. As always. Sam is going to need to stretch her stride once past the Azores High and push very hard for the tape.....

It looks likely to be a close-run thing towards the end.

Great!
