For those who moor their pride and joy in tidal river marinas such as Gosport. Since acquiring Elissaar 5 months ago I have managed to sail her a few times (very nice) and have been catching up on maintenance which the previous owners ommitted (less nice). The last item, a new fresh water pump, was fitted last Saturday. On Sunday I was down again (presenting the case that Gunwharf Quays is great for shopping at this time of year...) and looked up to notice the Windex wasnt turning. The reason was a bent VHF aerial. But says I to myself no matter for now, I still have the anenometer, I look up again and notice that it too has gone plus the masthead light.
The reason (having discounted large seagulls and climbing primates) seems to be the wash from passing ships rocking the boats so violently the masts crash, mine seems to have been caught by the fittings on the standing rigging of the boat next door. Considering this is 50 feet up, the boats must have canted at quite an angle. The marina office said there were some vessels speeding in the harbour recently - who knows.
The moral is, when mooring up make sure masts are staggered or you will suffer the same fate. I check this everytime, but the rocking was so bad it made little difference.
Does anyone know someone in Gosport who might be able to repair (replace) the mast head fittings (Silva nexus wind transducer and triclour) without costing the earth?
10 pound notes and showers spring to mind,
one depressed
