Hi, can anyone provide details of where I can read up on the Colvic Salty Dog. Not a lot of information on net.
Would be interested to hear how they perform.
Thanks

Are you sure it was a Colvic Moulding...For what its worth I seem to remember that it was moulded by an outfit in Maldon. Essex, that went bust in the mid 70,s. Quite a quick boat, shallow draft fin keel,(about 4') and a reasonable amount of room for a 27' footer. fairly substantial constuction if I recall.............HTH

The Salty Dog is a completely different boat to the Colvic 26. The Salty Dog hulls were all moulded by Colvic for Salty Yachts Ltd., some were finished by the company, others were sold in kit form. Apparently Colvic also sold some bare hulls after Salty Yachts stopped production some time in the 1980s. The company is still in business, but moved to GRP roofing products.

Designed by Peter Milne, and interior design by Edwin Meyers, the hulls were about 26.5 ft LOA, 9.5 ft beam and either bilge keel 3 ft draught or fin keel 4.5 ft draught. Powered by 7.5 hp Volvo with saildrive, or an outboard. Good reputation for sailing performance, like just about everything else Milne designed - eg the Stag - see http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/archives/stag-28/stag-28.htm

Unfortunately I don't have any photos or plans of the Salty Dog.

Salty Dog

certainly looks a good boat.

I owned Salty Dog from 1988 to 1996. She combined good performance with comfortable accommodation for a much below average, fot its size and type, price. I would reccomment them to anyone. An example of the hull strength was shown when I ran aground on hard sand and pounded for about 30 mins. The whole interior floor structure broke up (it had been very badly built by the first owner). We finally floated off on a rising tide, returned to base and had the damage surveyed.....there was not even a crack in the gelcoat of the underwater sections, even though the bottom was flexing like a tramopline as we were pounding. I contacted Peter Milnes, and he gave me, over the phone, a specification for rebuilding the floor structure, which I subsequently did. A fantastic boat!
