Our small Saltire flag which is flown in the rigging has been shredded and I cannot find a supplier who has one in the right colour - Azure Blue at the right size - 18'' x 12'' with a toggle and rope. Jimmy Greene's is just too big for a boat of our size - so says Mrs Dougie.

Grateful for any ideas

Got in touch - sorted - Gave me a choice of colours - Azure as is used at the Scottish Parliament or a darker blue as is used in the Union Flag. I leave you to guess as to which I chose.

Thanks for your help.

The darker blue is code M surely. We see a lot of lying skippers claiming to be "stopped, not making way" or whatever, while creaming along. Azure is the only 'true blue' and the sooner the Scots learn to recognise their national flag the better. Maybe that should be a pre-req before you are eligible to vote in the referendum.

Technically, the correct colour for the saltire, by recent decision at Holyrood, is Pantone 300. Pantone is a standard colour set used in the printing industry and is more-or-less the same as #0065BD in web land, which should be the colour of this posting.

Looks about right depending on how I angle the laptop screen... does that mean it's NOT azure, and isn't it a bit late for Holyrood to be deciding?
I thought azure was the heraldic term that's been used for yonks.

I think azure just means "sky blue" (battle of Athelstaneford) so what Holyrood did was plump for a particular shade. In heraldry any blue is azure, just as any white is argent and not actually silver.

Having dug a little more, it seems that nobody can decide what the best hex code for Pantone 300 is

Wikipedia says #0065BD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Scotland)

Goffgrafix says #0072CD (http://goffgrafix.com/pantone-rgb-300.php)

Uklabelpartners say #005EB8 (http://uk.labelpartners.com/pantone_coated_table.html)

Umsiko.co.za say #0067C6 (http://www.umsiko.co.za/links/color.html)

Encycolorpedia says #006EC7 (http://encycolorpedia.com/006ec7)

If you just bear in mind that the colour is based on sky blue, you won't be far wrong. When, in 832 King Angus saw a St Andrews cross in the sky, (jet con trails :D), just before a great battle against Athelstane, King of the Northumbrians. Angus took it as a good omen, and won the battle. Hence the flag. The blue (soon to be removed) in the Union flag, is simply wrong.
