Now I know there is a lot of money dahn sarf but who on earth is paying £970 per metre for a berth down there? No doubt vat is extra so a typical 12m boat will be costing £13.5k p.a. - twice the level of many other exhorbitant Solent marinas

I've been there once or twice and it seemed nothing special to me. So do people pay that much just to show they have the money to do so?

Anybody on here like to own up to a boat in Salterns?

We took a prestige out from there for a sea trial when Southern Motor Boats were there. Then we saw Peirs Morgan on Sandbacks (tv programme) and hey presto the developer who developed Sandbanks launched his yacht from there. I wondered if it was where the people who couldn’t get into the RMYC had there boats but could afford to!
If you think the berthing is expensive, fill up with petrol there.
Plenty of people want to be there though, so it must have something – never saw any empty berths.

I was there for lunch a couple of weeks ago and spotted the boats belonging to a number of prominent local property developers - as Twister Ken said virtually no rag'n'stick boys at all.

It is very close to the harbour entrance compared to most of the other marinas like ours at Cobb's Quay, and I looked at the cost in fuel and time savings to get out to sea when comparing marina prices, but for my 11 metre boat I would have to do about another 200 hours a year to just break even. Its a total non-starter. I don't know who their other clientele are, but they must be exceptionally well heeled to pay those prices.

We found ourselves weathered in there for a few days a couple of years ago...absolutely stunned when we came to pay the bill, nearly £40 per night for a 30 footer. It's also miles from town, with nothing special about the facilities and no real shops or restaurants on site.

I just don't get it...

My theory about this is that paying (say) two or three hundred grand for a mobo and then £15k per annum to moor it is still cheaper than financing a £2million mortgage for a gaff in Sandbanks...... ;)
