There is every chance I may be moving from Falmouth to Plymouth area.

What are the moorings like at Torpoint and at Saltash - I hear that at Saltash they are run by the sailing club?

Any good for 27 ft / 1.5m draft?

thx

Friend has had one at Torpoint side for years, TRSC, my only negatives would be the strong current there at times & there seems to be a lot of fouling in the river.

We have some spare moorings up at Cargreen, 2 miles up from Saltash. Much quieter than down the river, CH facilities too when you join:D:D

pm me if you might consider membership.

Yes - Cargreen is a great spot. Well maintained, secure moorings with a Boat Watch scheme for security. And they are the cheapest moorings on the river. You have to join the Cargreen Yacht Club but fees there are also the cheapest on the river. The clubhouse has showers, a bar (open Wed and Fri), events room dinghy parking, cadet section and ample parking. Moorings are sheltered compared to Torpoint and Saltash and monitored regularly by club members on an informal basis in addition to the club-run, formal boat watch.

The only down side is the distance to the SOund - an hour, give or take, depending on tide, but it's a pleasant sail through a mix of open country and interesting docklands. You can spend a happy weekend sailing within the river with anchorages as far apart as Calstock, Dandy Hole (up the Lynher River), Cawsand and even The Yealm.

Cargreen is very pleasant, but as James says, its a long way from the open sea. The general rule seems to be that moorings seem to get cheaper than the further up river you go. I have heard that the moorings run by the Wier Quay Sailing Club are even cheaper than Cargreen - but they are another mile or so up river. The moorings run by Wier Quay Boat yard are EXPENSIVE for what they are. If you want to be up there, I have been told that the best deal is to go to the club.

Not sure that I would describe the moorings at Saltash as 'exposed'. Most of the moorings at Saltash are run by Saltash Sailing Club, and most of them below the bridge are trot moorings which are occasionally a bit of hassle with a strong tide and a brisk cross wind, but they are all tidal river moorings with the tide more or less running in linear fashion through the trots. In terms of picking one up there is nothing exceptionally difficult - but perhaps not quite as easy as a swinging mooring. (We have one of the trot moorings S of the bridge.) Saltash also administer some swinging moorings just north of the bridges and the down side is slightly less security and a longer dinghy ride from the club. The Tamar River yacht Club administers a whole load of moorings (again mainly trot moorings) on the Devon side of the river just South of the bridges. All the clubs have dinghy storage and launching facilities and I think they are all friendly and open to applications from new members. I certainly haven't heard anything against any of the local clubs and they all seem to muck along together in reasonable harmony, so take your pick. Although a club will sometimes say that they have no spare moorings, it sometimes transpires that they have moorings that aren't being used and you can sublet from the owner for a year or six months. This is what we did at first. We went on the waiting list and sublet a mooring from a regular at the club who was rebuilding his boat. Eventually he took so long over the rebuild the club insisted he sold the mooring to us. NB Saltash buys up all moorings nowadays and lets them out themselves - but it doesn't make too much difference to the end user as far as you are concerned. There are some moorings off Saltash that are run by a couple of local mooring groups/associations but I think you have to be a local to get a chance of one of those. I believe that Diving Belle who maintain a lot of the local moorings might administer some as well, but I am not sure - you would have to make enquiries.

Go and meet some of the people and when they realise you are serious and not just 'someone on the phone' you might unearth a few offers and possibilities.

We had a mooring with Huggins brothers at torpoint marina for a few years..

We had one of the moorings they run down near cremyl in the lee of mt edgcome park... Just as you clear the narrow into the hamoaze you can see them off to port.. They run some for and aft and some swinging....

It's a excellent spot only really exposd to the north.. And doesn't have the wash and current problems that exist directly off the ballast pond.

They run a decent water taxi, and in the winter you can get a ab in the pond if you put your name down.. There is parking and showers at the pond as well.... I think there taxi will now even scoot you around to the barbican....

Security was good as its overlooked by the military and the navy plod boat used to go past us a couple of times every night....

A big thanks to Geoff White for his help with this, and also for being so great at introducing me to Cargreen. Thx.
