Things must be moving on as I am now asking interior design questions, not how do I start my engine! I currently have a scaby old carpet with tired and rusty pop fastners, not all intact, over a cork floor. Shall I get a new carpet or attach carpet tiles or something else?

'Turtle Mat' works very well tho a bit pricey for large areas; should be reasonable for a 30 footer. There is usually a stand at the Boat Shows.

I use carpet tiles. Great underfoot when it's your turn to make the coffe on a cold morning.

The popyprop ones will stand salt water and the scrubbing needed when your Fray Bentos makes a bid for freedom. Get cheap ones so it doesn't cause too much anguish when you spill used engine oil on them; you'll be sick of 'em before they wear out.

I used carpet joining tape to hold 2 or 3 together so they can't slide underfoot. Don't stick 'em down or you cant take 'em up to clean underneath or hose 'em down after a wet passage.

I had fitted carpets on the boat but removed them as they were too much trouble to remove if wet and cleaning them was a nightmare. I managed to "aquire" a few packs of carpet samples (swatches?) with bound edges and backing from a carpet center all for the sake of asking. They are more like throw mats but great on the boat and warm under foot, easy to lift for cleaning or if wet and don't slip on the cabin sole even without tape.

Where can I get that stick on plastic that looks like wooden flooring?

Robbins Timber and Toomer & Hayter(?) both supply it. About £75 a sheet.

I just recently fitted waterproof carpet to the cabin sole, took me a day, sharp knife, hot melt glue gun, a few swear words and a little sweat but all up I am very happy with it and has made an old sole like a new one.
