Salmon and Sea Trout return.

Prompted by a report in our local rag last week of a Salmon caught on a rod and line somewhere around Gravesend ,asked up at Allington Lock if they had seen anything up there.Much to my suprise they mentioned several occasions when both sea trout and more rarely salmon have been spotted.
Got the be good sign that river water quality is getting much better as time goes on.
We noted a seal ,when we parked the boat at the weeekend and this being right in the middle of Rochester town centre a few yards from the High St..

Really, I wonder what was in the effluent that the flounder were attracted to?

The paper mills were some of the worst offenders of dumping c**p into the river,but a few years ago they were taken over by foreigners Smurfit who cleaned up their act and invested in some decent filtering no doubt due to meet EU regulations on water quality.
The original UK owners seemed quite happy to wallow in their own filth aided and abetted by lax UK regulations allowing all sorts of muck and chemical run off from agriculture to get into the water course..
The river at that location used to display a fine head of foam for most of the time.
All the locks and weirs on the Medway now have fish passes to assist movement of fish.

Why can't we have those, its like those electronic fast passes on tollgates abroad where you don't have to stop. Fish has a fast pass that bypasses the lock

There were reports of Salmon in West Stockwith basin a few weeks ago. Presumably locked up off the Trent with a boat.

We saw a dolphin in the Trent on our way back from Leeds (and there was no alcohol involved!!!). It travelled from Keadby to West Stockwith in the company of a narrowboat (no taste these animals) before putting on a great display of playfulness outside the lock then gracefully heading back down towards the Humber.
