Go to your neighborhood friendly Broker. He/She/It will do it all for you for a small friendly fee.

You just get the official "Bill of sale" form, fill it out and have the signatures witnessed, thats it as long as there is no outstanding mortgage on your behalf and if theres one for him, it's noted on the bill of sale. Thats where you're responsibilty ends, it's now up to the purchaser, it's also up to him to check for any outstanding mortgage. This is of course, as long as the vessel is registered in your name, if it's not, then you have major problems and I would go to your local friendly broker, as Byron suggests!

I've just done all this for a boat we bought in August. Owners wanted to keep the name so we had to apply for a new name. This has to be unique, so we kept phoning Cardiff (029 20 448800) until we came up with a unique name for part 1.

Then sent off bill of sale & registration document plus form for change of name plus cheque £99, few weeks later they sent us a marking & carving note which allows you to remove the old name and paint the new. We didn't change the port of registry as this was another £30.

You have to send the carving note back signed to say you've changed the name, then it takes a few more weeks before amended certificate arrives. Registry of Shipping & Seamen has just moved to PO Box 420 Cardiff CF24 5XR and is part of MCA.
