Just read on BBC local news that the sale of lock keepers cottages has been halted for at least 6months pending a full review. The EA hadn't expected such a negative reaction and bad publicity from interested parties.

It seems the SOS group headed up by a lock keepers wife, MPs, councillors and other campaigners have been instrumental in achieving this. Good for them !

I think some members of this forum should also give themselves a pat on the back for contacting people and helping , aswell as the whole forum kicking up a fuss .
Well done /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The shared ability of several learned forumites was an important catalyst to the end result in our particular battle IMHO.
I believe we have won this particular battle, and need to think about the inevitable war. The Internet is about as powerful tool as we could ask for, and this is a good example of how good it gets.

At the end of the day, it's our River, we are the predominant users, we certainly pay our share, whilst respecting the environment as much as possible, and we can't give up on it.

Driving to Southampton every weekend from March to October isn't an option /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Oh yes.

You can even wear an EA head office uniform if you like.

I hope you are right and that it has nothing to do with the fact that the price of property in the UK is falling like a stone and they don't want to be seen as giving them away.

Halting the sale now could just be their back-door get out clause until the market picks up? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This is the latest 'official' statement

Thames Lock houses summary briefing update

Following a meeting with the Minister Phil Woolas and MPs Martin Salter and Theresa May, we have agreed to put on hold any changes proposed by the lock house review until we have completed our full review of Waterways staff roles and responsibilities, and terms and conditions.

No action will be taken to sell or rent lock houses until these negotiations on the full review are completed. We anticipate that this will take 6 months but this guarantee will continue until all negotiations are completed or January 1, 2009, which ever is latest. We will then review the position on lock houses with lock-keepers and their representatives and with the MPs group.
