I was thinking about crossing the bar earlier.....

I draw nearly 2 meters... do you think I will have enough depth??

They put that feature in to keep you captive in there once you have found out what their charges are. From seaward going in it all looks very lovely, then the money collector man arrives.

I used to skipper a boat that drew about 9ft, going in and out of Salcombe thirty weeks per year, and I cannot remember a single occasion on which we were ever kept in or out by the depth of water -- though at spring tides we had to think about the timings.
In those days, the deepest water was well over to the west of the leading line -- almost touching the rocks.
But I believe the charted depth on the leading line is now about a metre or so -- and with half tide in that area being about 3m, you should always have at least 4m if you go in or out on the line at half tide or above.
But go somewhere else if there's a strong southerly against the ebb.

I concur with all you say even though my time doing the same as you was nearly 35 years ago. I entered and left Salcombe many times in the next 10 years or so in another capacity and there was little if any change to The Bar.
I do know of one young man who walked across The Bar at LW Springs and as far as I remember the water came up to his waist, or was it his chest?

as others have said - keep well to port and next to those rocks just south of Splats cove. I believe theres a new port marker their now. I used to live on the hill above the leading lights for years. The lifeboat use to go out hugging those rocks in whatever conditions!

Bah, that's virtually flat calm, it's normally like that on Salcombe bar!
That's nothing for us locals but I guess it looks a bit choppy to those from Robin Hood land :D
