Stopped in Salcombe last week - well more of a forced stop really due to a broken tiller en route to Plymouth. Just like to say that the Harbour Masters Office were very understanding of our plight and let us stay overnight on the pontoon. Also visited Salcombe yacht club for a bit of liquid refreshment and was made very welcome by all there and even managed a quick chat with the Commodore who was most welcoming. Left with an overall good impression of the place. Just need to fix me tiller now - anyone know a good (cheap!!) source of new tillers?????????????? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I understand your need for a cheap one, having been to salcombe you wont have much money left /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We were there last season. Paid for 3 nights, changed plans and left after two. HM noticed us going and promised us a free night on our next visit. Seemed genuine, lets see what happens when we return later this year...

What boat do you need the tiller for?
I have a spare handmade laminate tiller in hardwood that I no longer need, sitting in my garage in plymouth. If your boat is still here you are welcome to size it up.
Post or PM me if you are interested

Oh yes the tiller saga. Tiller now needed for a Trapper 500 - a curvy type tiller. Damn thing snapped at just the wrong moment and left me floundering for a bit. Amazing what rope, cable ties and gaffer tape can accomplish in under 5 minutes. Glad I watched Blue Peter as a kid!!!

The usual advice is Tony Mackillican for lovely laminated tillers.

He made a lovely one for me (and modified the design from old one that I sent to him which was broken). A swan neck tiller for a 28' yacht was about £150 but its stunning.

He has the trapper 500 tiller on his site as a standard one..

Turnaround was 3 weeks for my made to measure one.

or you could follow the advice in one of the recent sailing mags from March or April (?PBO, ?ST) that showed you how to make a laminated tiller.. after reading it I felt the £150 paid to Tony Mackillican was money well spent!!

Nice to see you got a positive response in Salcombe. Personally, I've found that the harbour staff, especially under the new HM, are very friendly and helpful.

Wonder if I'll get a mooring fee discount for this /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually, above comments are true.

Just picked up our new yacht from Salcombe. They managed to lose the cradle after the boat was put in the water and we are having to fork out ££'s to hire one. Let me know if you bump into an abandoned cradle next time you are down there lol.
