Great first project is a bag.

Get some material
Fold it double
Sew along any two open sides
Turn inside out

Done.

It's almost as easy to add a drawstring. .. Handles, Flaps, buttons, seams etc.
Use heavy stuff to make deck furniture storage bags - or anything storage bags really.
Use fancy stuff to make bags to put kids gifts in, beach bags etc.

Probably best if you can find some canvass.
The the material is too floppy you won't get a good feel for how the proper stuff will work later.

Old knickers won't do.

I will knock up a sample with some pics later this evening.

wont old jeans do? pretty long to practice folding and sewing them!

What a day! So I spent the morning on the boat with the Cummins mechanic. No problem, apart from the fact it was freezing. After lunch I relaxed with a coffee and some Sailrite videos to get me in the mood. And just as I was ready to go down to my sewing room, the port rang. Would I move the boat because they want to dredge my place! I was there all morning! Anyhow we went down and moved it without drama. But it ate my afternoon, now I have to get dinner ready! At this rate it looks like Vas was right??

I have been practicing sewing ????all evening. I now have a pair of jeans that you can no longer put your legs through,
I’ve practiced winding a bobbin, threading a needle (much more complicated than it sounds). I practiced changing tension, and how to do that little back and forward motion to lock the thread at the beginning and end of the stitching. Still struggling to change direction and I keep sewing before I put the pressure foot down! And that creates a whole lot of work, yet I keep forgetting. Nonetheless, I’m quite proud. I can join two pieces of fabric. I just have to join then the way Hurricane does?‍?

Yep - if you forget to lower the foot and start sewing, "all hell breaks loose".

Now its time for me to come clean about trousers.
Last year, I bought some very cheap work trousers from B&Q.
They were too long in the leg so - I thought - get the Sailrite out and shorten the legs.

The first leg was great - fitted a treat so I did the other one.

When I came to try them on, I'd shortened the same leg - again!!!

I now had one leg too long and the other too short.
They went in the bin.

I know exactly what you mean by not putting the foot down before sewing. Creates a whole load of birds nest mess. When changing direction make sure the needle is always down, don’t be afraid to use the hand wheel if you can’t get the knack of stopping with the needle down.

I know exactly what you mean by not putting the foot down before sewing. Creates a whole load of birds nest mess. When changing direction make sure the needle is always down, don’t be afraid to use the hand wheel if you can’t get the knack of stopping with the needle down.

I would just like to add a comment to Tim's about turning direction.
For example if you are sewing up to a corner and want to carry on sewing round the corner.
Yes - bury the needle before turning the fabric but my added comment is "bury the needle and hand turn the wheel until the needle starts to rise again.
That way, it has completed the stitch underneath.
If you don't do that, the top stitch "takes a short cut" which looks funny as well as not sewing right into the corner.

You can lift the foot to help rotate the fabric but REMEMBER TO PUT IT BACK DOWN AGAIN before continuing to sew.

It’s made from a vinyl SUP storage bag. I thought I should make it oversized because I’m not ready for close tolerances.
Anyhow that’s the last project for a few days, the sun has come out so it’s time for a little boating. Better to be on a boat without covers than not on one with?‍
I know it’s portable but it’s thirty kilograms. I’m not lifting it??‍

If you make something like that larger than required, you can always put another row of stitches in to make the item smaller. It's a right pain trying to make it bigger
