My annual travel insurance with Pantaenius expires in February and the chaps they use have stopped issuing these policies.
All the normal travel policies I have found do not cover one if arrival is by private vessel rather than commercial plane/ferry/tunnel. Has anyone found a policy that does????
Could self insure but would be nice to have cover

Most travel insurance - as you found out is aimed at scheduled commercial travel and virtually nothing else.

Topsail Insurance might provide something useful for you. Read the details/conditions carefully!

Try Bishop Skinner.

Seemed pricy at the time we used them some years ago but very comprehensive cover. Never claimed on the policies though...

We have Bishop Skinner Medical Repatriation Cover and it is excellent.

My wife was attached by 2 pit bulls in Guatemala and very badly bitten at the beginning of December 2019 and they arranged and paid for everything for us including 2 weeks in 3 different hospitals, a Private ambulance 250Km to get us to the nearest best hospital, in Guatemala City a Medic vac to USA for treatment not available in Guatemala . They supported us up to and including to the stage where, 2 weeks later, my wife was well enough to return by air to the UK (Business class, accompanied, in a wheel chair) where treatment could continue via the NHS.

No connection to Bishop Skinner other than very grateful customers .

I have annual multi trip cover with Puffin insurance. Up to 60 days per trip. Very reasonable cost (relatively) i have been with them 2 years & on the second I had toothache & went for 2 visits to a dentist on the CIs. Puffin took about 6 weeks to pay in full, via third party review, with no excess deducted.
I explained I was going by boat & that my boat policy covered me on the boat & that I wanted cover once I was off the boat. They recorded the conversation & agreed OK to go by boat. I know they recorded it Ok because they were able to refer to it on second renewal..
The said they may ask for proof of time away from home, so I should keep record of ports visited, which i do. There are things like flights & luggage that i do not need so all these are on minimum value, but I do have the better class of policy ( I think it is their GOLD one) I do have legal assist etc. I am 72 yrs.

We have medical insurance via our Caxton FX cards. Last annual renewal was £80 for the 2 of us, covers us globally for trips up to 90 days and for recreational sailing up to 30 miles offshore. I used it last year when we were in Ethiopia (no sailing involved), the telephone assistance found a health centre in Addis Ababa, arranged an appointment and repaid the claim. Great service.

I now use Topsail. I used to use the Amex Platnium Card travel insurance and have claimed in the past with no problems. I gave the the AMEX card when they stopped covering off piste skiing without a guide (Interestingly they also suggested that they might not cover skiing unless a helmet was worn!). I now use Ski-club of GB skiing insurance covers off piste and skiing without a helmet. I have not found an insurer that will cover offshore sailing and off pieste skiing wothout a helmet. I would love to know if anyone knows of such a policy.

I was with them until I was 80 And then they stopped cover despite no claims. Very annoying and disappointing.

From what we're hearing out on the oceans, you did well to get covered until you reached 80, we know of several boats who're struggling to get long-term health insurance renewed once they reach seventy.

We used to use Insure and Go long stay cover for 9 months/year, which included coastal sailing and scuba (IIRC to 30m) as standard. Offshore passages could be covered for specified periods at extra cost. Premiums were OK until I reached 70 so now rely on EHIC.

I also use Insure and Go, gold cover gives us 90 days out of the country. About £120 for the year, and even after a claim for over £1000 no increases in premium.

This policy is designed for sailors:

I hope this helps,

Interesting that they don't cover Clipper events - ’due to the high level of risk
I am sure they didn't cover the Golden Globe participants either. I am not sure they would be interested in covering Jester challenger events either. So lets keep a sense of proportion here and not single out one specific event for criticism.

I am sorry if that rattled your cage -it was meant as an observation as that was the first time I have seen a named event specifically mentioned in insurance terms and conditions. The normal wording is usually along the lines of ‘racing‘ generally.
