Sailmaker recommendations please

The advantage to using Steve Goacher is that he is only around an hour from you so you can go and see him and discuss your needs quite easily.
He is a demon Hunter Sonata sailor as you probably already know - so knows what he is talking about and seems to understand Hunter performance well. These factors influenced my decision to get sails made by him for our Hunter Delta and he produced some beautiful sails which fit perfectly and set really well.
The other bit about him being nearby is that in the unlikely event of the sail not being perfect, he is likely to come and see you on your boat to sort out any problems.

Re: Winter & Boat Show offers

Provided you don't need the sail like yesterday, the best time is to buy a sail is over the winter. Sailmakers are not so busy and heavily discount to get you to part with your money.
I bought a fully battened main and roller genoa from Hood last year. Only had to pay for the main under their special offer last winter of "buy one get one free". Super sails, I'm chuffed to bits with them. My local sailmakers couldn't get close even with a less superior cloth.

Last year Kemp were offering a 15% discount for orders placed over the winter.

Err don't you mean summer?

I got Kemps, only had em 3 years but they seem good quality, and they gave me a free sausage bag when I broke the first one, and they fixed my jib that I had off them which I broke for peanuts. After sales support is good I'd say.

Are you racing or cruising? I had a Goacher No1 on my Intro which was superb. If I had wanted a sail for cruising I would have bought a different spec - less laminate more dacron. I currently have a Hood roller genoa of indeterminate age which sets OK and will last a few more years yet.

I feel obliged to put in a word for Jeckells. Not only good service, but good quality material. They convinced me at the boat show a few years ago by showing me different samples of sailcloth using a watchmakers eyeglass - they're not all the same! After four seasons, they look as good as new.

Hood - excellent quality at a price. Crusader - budget end of the business - and it shows. No experience of Goacher.

Personally, I use, and would recommend Owen Sails of Benderloch, near Oban - excellent quality sails, and good personal service.

We recently bought from Hong Kong Sails and well pleased. Nearly half price of most UK sailmakers. Quality seems fine for our general cruising use. At price can afford to replace more often which might be a good thing - but I suspect wont be necessary.

I have used Crusader sails to replace the sails on my current and previous boat and the cut, service and aftercare has been excellent.

Why has no one mentioned Hyde Sails ?? They offer excellent service, coming to my sailing club at a time that suited me, helping me unbend my sails, then measuring the boat and my old sails. The new sails were delivered and bent on, but they weren't happy with the way the clew was sitting, so took them away, made a small modification and dropped them by my place of work when it wasn't convenient to get down to the boat. The sails are superb and are much admired.

You should get a quote from Rolly Tasker Sails in Thailand. Made from same materials as in Euro but but lots cheaper.
