Ours has a stiff hull form and a deep keel but with too much wind and the traveller right off etc means the slot is closed and the sailpower effectively strangled. We also have a large and powerful rudder which although it remains very light on the wheel is going to be at an angle that is applying some brake force to forward motion. As you say, energy wasted.
We have a domed helmsmans seat and sloping sit-on cockpit coamings and once these are horizontal from the angle of heel that is about perfect, any more and it is time to put in a reef!
