SAILING WITH BABY -advice please

Boats are generally very amenable to making enclosed berths. In a very small boat, the best place may be on the cabin sole - our first slept on a piece of thick foam placed on the sole up towards the V berth in our Corribee. It meant she was enclosed on three sides, had nowhere to fall, and was easy to get to if she woke in the night. Our next boat had a forecabin in which, with the infill in to make it a double, the bed came right up to the cabin door. A foot high piece of plywood across the gap stopped her falling out but meant we didn't have to shut the door. We've also used a similar arrangment to make the quarterberth fully enclosed. If you have proper lee cloths, of course, you'll be pretty much sorted already.

The one thing I'd be wary of is trying to take a travel cot of any sort with you. Unless you've something fairly palatial there just isn't enough space, and its uneccessary.

Cheers

It is all doable and different things work for different folks, my suggestion would be to try it with a focus on keeping it light and fun for all concerned. A sense of humour and a committment to not shouting at anybody is probably more important than any kit you might buy.

Our twins, now 14, first came aboard when they were six months old (they were born in October) and did their first cross channel at 18 months. Forepeak was turned into a padded cell with cushions, sleeping bags etc. and this also worked as a playpen until the girls were about 2. Once they could walk LJ's were non negotiable and they had to be clipped on once out of the cockpit. Most journey's were relatively short until they were about 4 but they regularly lived aboard for a three week summer holiday when they were little.

Main issues were about keeping it fun for them, so destinations were decided by presence of beaches and crabbing locations rather than pubs and restaurants. Only real problem was the fact that they always seemed to need urgent attention just as we were mooring up in a tight marina berth with a cross wind and strong tide.

Thanks guys this has been very helpful! never even thought about buying the premade milk!
how would we fashion a bed safe enough for our boy? he is a major wriggler!

We used a travel cot secured in place by lee cloth and sail ties.

For next time we have what can best be described as a 'baby tent' which is smaller and less intrusive.
