Sailing west from Southampton with little children

I wouldn't go west of Plymouth. The further west you sail the worse weather you will encounter. Cornwall being a great county is blighted by wet miserable weather. When it's raining hard here the rest of the country is bright and sunny.
If you do make it, be prepared to spend long periods in the rain or confounded to the cabin.

Hello from Dartmouth! Crossed from Falmouth in one shot yesterday- sadly under motor most of the way but did hav a pod of dolphins with us for most of the journey- very entertaining. Want to get to Weymouth tomorrow but don't want to wait for eastern tidal gate at 19:00ish- is it ok to do the outer passage in light easterly winds? How far out do we have to go? We're in a 45ft Bene

In light winds you'll not have much bumpiness (5 miles is plenty). Your biggest problem will be pushing tide (which is at Springs).

You can go through the inside from about 8pm, which is the easist option to be honest.
