Sailing watches.....as in time, not standing

Re: Can\'t be a Rolex

Timex Expedition! Yes I've used these for the past few years and found them very good until this Saturday.

Last trip of the year- mooring to winter storage with my fairly new Expedition ( New, because my son borrowed the last one and lost it) when i caught it on the guard wire - not heavly, just a glancing blow when it pinged off and sank immediately. It didn't even float tantalisingly on the surface as things do before disapearing - no, it was gone in a flash. It must have been one of the strap pins letting go! So, to add my penny worth , go for one that has strong straps

cheap as chips

I've got one of these

except its got a white face and numerals, not ticks.
Its a couple of years old now, so they must have changed it, or stopped doing it.

Very very easy to read (for me this is important at sea - I want to glance at the time and don't want to have to put my specs on). Has an easy backlight. Accurate. Water resistant etc

Best of all, bloomin' cheap, so if you catch it and drop it in the drink (the strap is pretty strong), no tears before bedtime.

Watches on boats

As has been said before, buy a cheapie that you can read in the dark. It helps to have a countdown timer so you can be reminded to update the log; and a daily alarm to tell you when the Coastguard is going to lie about the weather.

I have a beautiful, but heavy, chunky watch that I take off as soon as I get on board, and put on the Micky Mouse one - reason is that it beats lumps out of the woodwork in a seaway - and even at anchor a knock against the table damages it. (the table, that is, the watch you could drive a tank over)

10 years ago I bought over the internet a watch advertised on PBO:I changed the battery twice, always had excellent service when sailing and racing: dial can be illuminated for a few secs or for 20 secs splits, it has chronometer, count down, split timing and alarm plud date (day, month year).
I think it is arpund 100£ and I think it is a relabeled version of some Casio watch (probably no nore marketed by Casio as not "fancy" enough.
Cheers,
Gianenrico
