Had a fantastic week on the Clyde as Comp Crew along with an older couple. He doing DS and his SWMBO along as a fare paying passenger. School was 'Second Wind Sailing' and instructor was Steve Tyrer. Boat was a Moody 41 called 'CHEWSY'. Arrived at Troon around 4pm on Sunday 3rd October and SWMBO and I managed to steal the comfortable V-berth before the others arrived. Spent the night in the marina and went through a safety briefing. Log and pics as follows.
Monday 3rd October
After morning spent carrying out various manouevres and execises in the harbour and marina, we had lunch and then hoisted sail with the genoa hauled out to about a no.2 jib and 3 reefs in the main. Wind was WSW F5-6. Seas 2.5 mtrs with some rain along the way. Ran North with the wind just aft of the beam on a port tack, to between the Cumbraes where we dropped the main and continued up into Rothesay Bay where we picked up a mooring bouy for the night. Distance run 28.8 miles. Max speed 8.8 kts.
Tuesday 4th October
Dropped the mooring in Rothesay Bay and headed up the East Kyle. Started with a SW F5 but died as we got to the Colintraive ferry. Motored through the Burnt Isles with what little breeze there was, on the nose, until we got to Kames where we got the wind back to SW F3. Hoisted full main & genoa and headed towards Ardlamont practising MOB on the way then the wind increased to a W F6-7. Back to 3 reefs and no.2 jib. Carried out MOB & heaving to procedures in lower Loch Fyne. Wind increasing to F7-8 and we ran up into Tarbert just as the rain came on. Only needed to tack twice. Moored up in Tarbert for the night, but not before Steve slung the MOB fender over the side one more time, just before we turned in towards the entrance. Distance run 30 miles. Max speed 8.4 kts.
Wednesday 5th October
Sailed off the mooring in Tarbert after interesting night. 60 mph Westerly winds through Tarbert overnight. Headed down the Mull in varied conditions, still with 3 reefs and no.1 jib. Sunshine & showers. Good sail down Kilbrannan Sound. Saw square rigger. Lots of MOB practice using sail only. Headed in to Campbeltown for the evening. Had lovely hot bath in The White Heart Hotel, followed with meal of great Crab Soup and main course of fresh Scallops wrapped in Bacon. Mmmmm gorgeous. Distance run 34.7 miles. Max speed 9.4 kts. Excellent.

Thursday 6th October
Visited the Whisky Shop in Campbeltown. Slipped the mooring and went out of Campbeltown Loch and practiced points of sail and gybing and MOB using heave to method again. Went in behind Island Davaar & siled up to a point well behind the Island, where we dropped the hook and had lunch. Weighed anchor and headed South to ????? where we again dropped the hook and had dinner prior to leaving for night passage to Lamlash. Unfortunately we ran out of wind halfway across, but gorgeous night sky with 3 shooting stars spotted as well as a few low flying fast moving jets. Wind dropped and then turned against us, so we motored into Lamlash Bay and picked up a swinging mooring off Kinglass Point. 19:00 - 23.50.
Distance run 43.7 miles. Max Speed 8.1 kts.

Friday 7th October
Last day and we awoke to a stunning morning, but unfortunately very little wind and what there was would be on the nose on the way back to Troon. Practiced lassoing mooring bouys of Lamlash. Spotted MCA sreaming around. Thought we may have a boarding encounter with them. Didn't happen, they just shot past. Motored the whole way back across to Troon on a gorgeous beautiful day with plenty of porpoise spotted.

Fantastic week, couldn't have had better sailing or wind direction. All enjoyed themselves immensely, with SWMBO in terrific humour every day. Definitely hooked, and will go back to Steve in the spring for DS course, although i'm not sure steve could cope with anymore tongue lashings from my SWMBO./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Apparently Steve also had Sailbad for his DS course too albeit he was with Sunsail then. With any luck he will stop lurking on here and start posting. Thanks Steve for a very enjoyable week.
