Sailing to Iceland in a steel self build - Andy Baldwin - Scary Mary - remarkable

Andy is one of a kind and one of the nicest blokes I've ever met(and one of the strangest).Good sailor too, me been sailing 40 years,Andy dinghy sailing 3months, who mostly won our impromptu races. Grrrr.

gifted - unconventional

he did a cracking job of the boat

the lines look great - not sure about the degree of mast rake

the interior was really sparse - bare metal all over the shop

no roller reefing so he would have to go to the foredeck

the hatch was an all or nothing affair

hard to see out, not much of a forward view - nor much of a stern one

and cold food

a hard but gentle man

Obnoxious builders or obnoxious nissans?

Obnoxious nissans. Though practical, so I don't blame anyone who needs it for buying one.

They used to advertise them with a particularly anti-social advert, with an aggressive voice saying that it "gets respect!". Seemed to me like incitement to drive like a selfish ********. Not that their owners do, particularly, but that was the tone of the advert.

How did he propel it! Pedal powehttp://www.ybw.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=4522057r(no I'm not joking)

I think it was a plan that did not quite come off

no idea how he planned to do it

the walking boat was quite an achievement so I am sure he had a plan

but... a plan is just a guess at the way you wish the future to unfold

a man of vision

No plan did work(sort of) Andy and a local pedalled it out of town and when they got to a hill they just waited until they'd roped in 4 passer-by's and off they would all pedal. He reckons you could go up a mountain road if you had enough energy.

Normal inboard - no problem.

Air-cooled engine plonked right in the middle of the accomodation, though!

I suppose it amounts to hot air central heating! :D A singlehander won't have to endure the noise too much, when it's running you'll be at the helm. I can't fathom the lack of stove or insulation; it must make summer sailing a chore never mind winter, uncovered steel condenses everything you breathe out.
