no need to watch this if you have ever sailed there before - you know what it is like already

it is a unique place to sail

and you are never alone

it started to grow on me though

even got used to the constant mobo wash shaking the wind out of my sails

but the place still has the power to shock

some really competent sailors there

the films have almost got to the point where the three of us sail from Chich to Anstruther in six days

I have yet to shock you northerners with a real view of the Hamble - bloody nora

D

I wanted to make a decent hash of the Solent films primarily because people watch films of their own patch first

pick up a travel book that covers your area and the first thing you do is to look to see if the blokes ideas are in any way in alignment with yours - see if you can trust him

with 50,000 solent sailors and being done is a Westerly should tick a few boxes

I am hoping that the Solent blokes who saw me saying what an awfully good steward of the Beaulieu bottom Monty is might then follow me - virtually speaking - to Scotland.

I am getting quite a few paypal taps now so that is good for the funds. Once a bloke has made the first tap they often become a repeat offenders - there is a bloke in Canada who watches the films on his excercise bike in the garage - still 15 below where he is. He is a good tapper. I think KTL is part of his peddling penance. A Canadian winter must be a fearful thing to experience

It will be interesting to see how finances unfold as the narrative moves further North.

I have started putting curt little suggestions on the front of the youtube films now

it upset one Norwegian greatly and he started being quite rude - but I think that when we are on youtube we think that by tolerating the shouty google adverts before, during and after each film that we have have paid the rent by renting them our eyes. As indeed we have - the rent to google of course.

The films get around 1000 hits in the first week -

No adverts on the vimeo route though -

apart from the speciously hypothecated paypal buttons.

I am curious to know why people pay - there must be a range of emotions going on there both among the tappers and the takers.

Dylan.

Is there any other route to monetise the videos via Vimeo or is it purely down to PayPal tappers.

I wonder if the motivation to donate is akin to supporting a favourite good cause by dropping a few pounds into a collecting tin.

there may be a bit of that

however, I would hope that it would also be a desire to see the films continue

after-all no-one is watching just to see if I went around Shetland and lived

that is all in the blog

I confess that I am unsure about what is going on. I do know that most of the MOBs see what I am doing and they have a pretty good idea about how much it is costing me

they also know that I occasionaly publish the number of taps and value of them.

Yesterday, for instance it was 11 taps amounting to £33 and $50

They also see my **** car and screwfix foulies.

so is it charity?

- it is in that it is discretionary

but there are more worthy causes - the rnli

so they are tapping against this years films to make sure that next years appear.

The films are sponsored - not by a clothing company or a boat maker or even Rolex but by ordinary sailors stuck at home and wishing that it was warm enough to go sailing

because the films are great.... I know we will never really pay enough, nowhere near enough the real value of the films.

Well it is mainly that for me.... and I have tapped and will again (the length of the Solent one was excellent & that despite having done it many times in other peoples boats)

It's also (in my mind) a "well done" for the quality of the work, it also seems 'correct' to pay for something that I've taken enjoyment from...

Never tried Vimeo before & all i got was a bit of jolting film
had to stop after a couple of minutes
Not sure why, but sorry I will not be looking again if that is what happens
Any recommendations ( other than telling me boil my head!!!)

deepest apologies

it is here it is on youtube - but will be preceded by two messages

one from google for Stenna stair lifts and the other from the Institute of Marine Psychology

you can flick through to one minute in and skip the PNM warning for MOBs

that aside, there is a download button on the website on this page

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/blogs/ktl-7-part-9-sailing-the-length-of-the-solent/

or you can right click this

and save as and then watch it

on the other hand this might all be a bit of a faff

so here is a pussy video

Vimeo doesn't work very well for me either. It's lovely quality, but it stop and starts every 3 seconds, then says there's a problem with the download and won't restart. Tried 3 times. I expect it needs a better internet connection.

I had problems with Vimeo a few times last week, but either hit the download button, or waited until it's out on Youtube... either way, Vimeo behaving for me at the moment...

Couple of the other MOBs mentioned this - not tried it yet.... http://www.videolan.org/index.html

It could reveloutionise your viewing experience

it is amazingly well designed and sips resources, plays everything including dvds, you can tell it to stay on top of of the the other windows so you can watch in a tiny window while working on other things

it is free to the people who use it to watch stuff - unless they want to make a donation - those of us who compress the vids using it have to pay for a license. I also have to pay a license for vimeo - consumers of the vimeo vids do not

it is the way the world works nowdays - and nothing wrong with that

they also make a version for you mac lads

not sure if you can get one for an ipad table mat though
