Hi
Anybody got any experience of sailing in the Canary Isles I am considering going down there for next winter, any recomendations to when to sail down which Islands are best and which Marina should I make my base, also inexpensive flights from the North west.
Regards Mike.

Hi
Like to hitch a ride. Port Mogan in Gran canaria is almost heaven. Flights from Luton with Britannia now that are in the low bugdet fares

Have cruiser from Los Americanos marine to Gomera and roundabout. Not impressed. Gomera is a spectacular island and well worth a visit - take a tour into the interior which is botanically quite stunning.

Have also sailed from Gran Canaria on a square rigger.

Winds between the islands are tricky. In the wind shadow there is almost nothing then you enter the acceleration zones when it suddenly rises to Force 6-7.

general advice from the pilot books is to be south of gibraltar by 1st september. that's a bit extreme but i'd certainly want to be past cape finisterre by then.

the harbours around the canaries get pretty full towards the end of november before the main departure time for the atlantic crossing. steer clear of las palmas until the ARC leaves (last sunday in november).

No Chris, it's not the Nelson, it's the Stavros S Niarchos with the Tall Ships Youth Trust. I posted a link to the voyage a few months ago - here it is again, even though it's overbooked.

as i understand it the stavros n and the prince william are the replacements for the churchill & miller. is this the STA under a new name and what are the age limits on the trips?

Went down this year via Puerto Calero (quiet but very pleasant, though not cheap) in Lanzarote (somewhat barren, but that's to be expected). Across to Las Palmas which was very reasonable cost wise, good facilities, but busy and noisy-ish). Sta Cruz de Tenerife was twice the price of Las Palmas and marina facilities very poor. Puerto Mogan very busy, advice is generally to book ahead for this harbour.

Brand new AWB's ex factory are being delivered ex Saint Gilles via Canaries as we speak (every year at this time), which makes for an interesting start to trip then.

Yes Mike, I can advice you as to where to sail in the Canarys and where to berth or anchor etc, starting north, la Graciosa has a slpendid new harbour, no water or electricity, then there are several good places to anchor, the other islands also offer you nice beaches in which to drop the hook, have a read on my web www.canarysailing.com, there is a write up on a two weeks trip to la Graciosa, I think you will find it useful
