Sailing the Aegean Sea

The wise say you should be out of the Agean by June and back in September. We crossede from W to East last year between April and the end of June and it was a great cruise.

What I am describing is nothing like Sahara dust. The area surrounding the pathways at the edge of the water is/was unsurfaced ground. The strong wind was picking this up and blasting it at all the boats berthed along the wall. From landward all that could be seen was a vista of brown boats. I would imagine that a pressure washer should clean off the grp surfaces but some of that canvas is probably still brown.

Plus all that grit/sand that acts like grinding paste that's absorbed into the standing rigging and other moving parts!

Ignore the nay-sayers and go for it!
There'll be plenty of space in late April and if it kicks up rough:
The anchorage on the small island just around the corner (SW) from Delos is secure/safe in all but southerlies and in those you can tuck-up to the south of Mikonos town. Down at Thira, provided you're not deeply dafted, the harbour/marina down at the SW corner of the island (can't remember its name) is well sheltered and nothing like as bad to get into as Rod the Gods Pilot Book suggests. If it's really ****, you can catch a fast-cat ferry from Paros and do a day trip to Thira.

Good choice for your cruising plans. Add Ydra, Aegina, Rhodes and you will have picked five of the most crowded harbours, ok in spring or late autumn but hell on sea in the summer. Cruise further down the Cyclades or further up in the Sporades and you will have it all, peace quiet and chill. Although we are about to start our farewell tour of the islands this spring, we have enjoyed the mainland harbours of the Peloponnese much more. Less frequented and more " Greek " anyway, good luck

Your observation is interesting because, having tried the islands, I too am happy to give them a miss and stick to the mainland. Apart from everything else your money goes a lot farther and there is infinitely less tourist blight.
