Sailing qualifications for beginners ?

All the charter companies in the Med accept the ICC, in the Caribbean they don't ask for any qualification but they do ask your experience. Med charters are fine.

Just out of vague interest do they require 2 qualified people? What happens if i wanted to take my kids? Wife wont go within a mile of a boat!

I think you should take an exam for Competent Crew, I had taken the course this year and wasn't entirely happy. Previously I had some coaching from a retired full time RYA Instructor who used to teach at Gravesend 2hr sessions over six weeks, this was earlier this year, also ordered books from RYA, the same as used in the exam, done a lot of self study since buying my boat in Febuary 2014..Anyway there were ladies as well doing the course about 9 of us in total, amongst us was a foreign lady who had trouble speaking English and as previously mentioned the instructor was engaged with this women every session we had explaining over and over again the questions so we lost time, when we sat the VHF exam she was confused the whole time including another women who spoke about four words in responce to the instructor who was taking the exam everyone of us passed. I felt cheated, for all the effort that I put in, it ment the instructor that was taking the course had little time to answer questions from the rest of us,so it wasn't only me who felt cheated. I'm glad the next exam I take next year has a proper exam I couldn't go through that again.Just my pennies worth on the matter.

As I have said before, I got into sailing via RYA Level 2 keel boat course, which I would imagine is about the same level as Competent Crew.

My wife and I did the course with an instructor on a 33ft Beniteau. It was a very good introduction to the basics of sailing and boat handling. No navigation or passage planning though if I recall correctly.

They only require the skipper to have an ICC, many charterers have kids along in the summer holidays. If you do go with kids book a flotilla that's where the kids will be, lots of socialising between the adults and the kids off playing games usually.

Depends where you charter and what type of yacht. Most charter companies in the Aegean require the skipper to have a certificate - RYA, ASA, ICC, IYT all acceptable as are those of many countries. They also require a co-skipper, who may sign a declaration of competence / experience rather than having a certificate. Some companies will let the skipper sign a declaration instead but most now require a certificate as their insurance companies are getting fed up with charterers breaking boats and want the companies to show more diligence in who they allow to use them.

In the Ionian it all seems to be more lax ... and the average standard of sailing and knowledge of the Colregs is correspondingly lower in my experience - not those on this forum, obviously :)
