Sailing Out Of Portsmouth Etiquette! Sails Up Or not?

Your cone must have fallen off on the way to Poole Pete ;) My god that thing shifted, incredible difference in speed to all of us. Shame Simon in his Bene didn't have a go it would be interesting to see just how much quicker the Maxi is. I spent two days next to a Maxi 34 in Haslar Marina last week, apart from the windows she has pretty lines... The solid windscreen makes sense also I thought, I think a spray hood isn't the best design for protection and seeing through nowadays, pretty dated...

I will now start putting up my anchor ball especially in Chichester Harbour - apart from protocol and awareness for others these things are nice to do. I found out I should be withdrawing my ensign in over night or when not on the boat and will foloow that rule also...

Simon's boat (I thought it was a Bavaria rather than a Beneteau?) is much bigger than ours, so I expect he'd have been faster if he hadn't reefed down to storm canvas to stay with you guys. Unless you're in a planing dinghy or multihull, the length of the hole you make in the water is a massively determining factor.

Zagato,

I dunno, how about leaving ensigns up to give the ' experienced, tattered ' look ?!

As far as entering Portsmouth goes I'd have the engine on and be listening to QHM Channel 11 as I've always considered being run over by a warship or ferry as a less than perfect day.

Local Rule??

I don't doubt it...

I spent a week at Fort Blockhouse (HMS Thingamajig) last year happily watching people motor past (or trying to, depending upon the tide) and during that entire week I only saw 2 yachts correctly showing a motoring cone...believe it or not one of them was a Belgian yacht.

@DJE: Main up engine on and headsail furled for the entrance is the order of the day

+1. Main up before departing if necessary, provides stability without hindering visibility.

Incidentally I was on the helm yeaterday as we departed our mooring under sail (Main and Roller Genoa) - it is strangely gratifying to leave the marina so quietly. Just like a dinghy.

I agree that it played havoc with my forward visibility so I had someone at the bow as a lookout to ensure I did not run into anything.

The local rule is normally not to raise the genoa inside the harbour however it was quiet, nice gentle F2 blowing, risk assessment done etc etc..........

Andy

Sailed out main and genoa out, engines on many times over the last 12+ years, no one has ever commented or mentioned a 'local rule

Really, didn't realise there would be that much speed difference per length and I remember Simon saying he wasn't going to push it going over, more G&T's and a game of Scrabble I think :D. Definitely longer the better in that respect then but I can console myself in the fact that I beat a Crabber 26 from Bembridge to Portsmouth last week :D Yes sorry Simon/Helens boat will probably be a Bav.

Well, we certainly weren't all-out racing either. Bear in mind it was only the second time we'd been out in Ariam, so still getting used to the boat. Plus Steph was baking a batch of brownies on the way over, as we'd already eaten all the ones she'd brought with her :D

I prefer to hoist the main in the harbour, as immediately outside is often quite busy, you can end up motoring for a while before finding space to head up and hoist the main.

One of the benefits of being in Haslar is that you can take as much time as you like sculling up and down the creek sorting out fenders, lines and sails.
Ditto if you're up in the boondocks at the top of the harbour. And we have 40 minutes to get it all done while motoring along.
