sailing on windermere HELP

Looking for some honest advise on buying a sailing boat to put on windermere my heads in bits listening to all the sales yards trying to hold me by the ankles and shake because" this is the boat for you "
Always had motor boats as we have now, to be honest mainly for the space inside ,but getting bored and fed up pouring £100 a weekend into a v8 engine just to have lunch in Ambleside we need 6 berth , headroom ,and some space to cheat the kids at trivial persuit at night time the boss and i want a sailing boat, she tells me, something that we can continue to live on at the weekends through the summer only want to spend £10k max been looking for 30ft damaged or neglected as i love playing and i can do it just missed a jeanneau at ferry nab any advise would be very welcome size , type,make ect ect we have a swinging mooring thanks
 
The 10K and 30' seem to be mutually exclusive, certainly if you are looking @ Maiden & Total.

You could get something cheaper away from the lake and import it, it'll be about £1000 based on what I've been quoted to get my Centaur 26' to Whitehaven from Windermere.

If you want a W/E cottage that you can move about, go for standing headroom/space rather than sailing performance.

Not really. I haven't any special knowledge of boats available on the lake. The best thing is to walk around the boat park at Ferry Nab and look for private sale boards hanging on boats and have a gentle cruise around the moorings. There was a Feeling 850 up near Waterhead that dropped from £18K to around £12K during the year, but it may be sold now.
Down around the 23/25ft mark there will be quite a few, but will that be big enough?

As a complete alternative. Keep the boat you have. I don't think there is so much reliable wind on Windermere when the weather is nice so you might end up being frustrated sailer and motoring a lot.
I believe there are now tight speed restrictions on power boats on Windermere so a V8 engine will not be much use to you. Would you consider a lower power diesel engine in place of V8.
A friend here had a volvoV8 stern drive with contra rotating props. He got a good trade in deal with the engine and had a 250 Mercury 6cyl 4 stroke OB fitted. The result was better fuel consumption better speed and quieter operation. Now on Windermere you will not want a lot of power so a 40 HP might do you well.
The OB was fitted on an outrigger from the transom giving all the old engine space as new usable room.
It is always cheaper to be satisfied with what youu have than to be changing boats. good luck olewill
 
I think that Feeling eventually sold. I know someone who went to look at it and he wasn't impressed, something about a leak in the transome area.

That Jag 27 is a reasonable candidate. I had a Jag 25 and it was lacking in headroom but a sprayhood would have helped a great deal giving standing head room at the hatch/galley. The 27 has more headroom. It's only 5 berth, could you manage? Ther is nothing to stop you going to look, it may help you decide what you want and don't want.

I think you missed the magic phrase that SWMBO wants a sailing boat!!
Whilst the wind is very strange here, it does mean you can experience everything and every direction in a couple of hours sailing. Plenty of tacking practice.
A boat getting on towards 30' will motor nicely, with the boom well out of the way, whereas motor boats are very difficult to sail.

The balance will be between budget an accommodation.

We have slept 6 on the Centaur, 2 little ones down one quarter berth. It's OK for a w/e but I wouldn't want to spend much time like that.
 
the last Chentleman's cruise I did was in 2008.
TCM chartered a 45ft something or other and on it was Himself, Parahandy, Muzzy, myself and Longjohnsadler.

One might have thought there were too many berths as TCM slept on the cabin sole for some drink related reason.
However, Para and LJS seemed to occupy a double cabin each.
Muzzy appeared to sleep in a single berth and as everyone's gear was dumped in that cabin, I was allocated a very small seat.

I have always believed that there must have been another cabin somewhere which we didn't manage to find.

A reduction in charter fee share was not forthcoming.

Don't think he has much choice about this William and as for the wind - well you were obviously not there last summer. Yachts were "stormbound" at Ferry Nab for a week!

It was the bloke in Hawkshead, I think it's Brown's, he brought the boat from Burneside to the lake organised by Maiden. It's about £250 each end for the lifts and mast, plus the transport, it came to £800 if I was flexible with dates, I added a bit 'coz OP was asking about 30' boats.
 
Never could understand why everyone went for windemere-used to have a lot of fun sailing a weekend sailer on Coniston-in my day in the 1980s there was a small launch and storage facility on the lake shore just below Coniston-so its long and narrow but you would get steady winds funelling up of the sea and cross winds blowing down the Coppermines valley.
Much prefered it to Windermere which for me was like being on the M6!
Imagine its even worse these days!
 
Nope. It's almost deserted a lot of the time. In the North basin it's a busy day if I can see 30 yachts.
Since the speed limit it's quietened down a lot.
I took my trimaran and Heron and clinker dinghies to Coniston a bit.
I thought it was a bit tedious after a while.
 
Hi, Saw your post asking about what boat to buy we went through this in 2010. We knew we wanted a sailing yacht for Windermere and looked first of all around the Lakes but didn't find the right one. Looked at lots elsewhere as well then found one on the SE coast in Levington it's a Sportina 730. Supposedly a 4-6 berth but only if some are midgets and love each other very much. We have two boys which are adult size and also wanted headroom and a proper sailing boat and we found it! I am 5'8" and can stand up in the galley with the hatch closed, you can also get in the seperate heads and close the door when you want to sit down. Not many yachts of 24" can boast of decent space as well as a lifting keel and a lively sail with retractable spinniker pole and furling genoa. Look at the Delphia or Sportina's they are Polish made yachts for their lakes which are similar to Windermere. We have an 8hp outboard and can moor anywhere around the Lake no real depth restrictions and cheap to fill up.

The OP said he was after a 30 footer and has bought one now according to another post he has made asking for own boat tuition.

Still waiting to hear what he has bought!

We picked up our bill of sale for our lovely new (to us) boat which we are having moved by Browns in March. We are very excited for the upcoming season :-))
