I think haydn has covered most aspects of sailing. Ian is saving himself a fortune.

H forgot to mention the total lack of comfort in a sailboat, which is the main area where stinkies find sailing so strange. In a sailyboat, for example, they never have electric bogs, and they never use the showers, cos of course they are rubbish and also because the beds are so uncomfy that every morning they just want to get the hell off that boat. Good practice for sailing is to try and get a good night's sleep on the floor of your bedroom, not on the bed.

This lack of nice loos etc explains why there are more shore showers in Mercury harbour with loads of raggies but only 400 boats, than in Antibes, where there are 2000 boats mostly stinkie: the cabins are so comfy on stinkieboats that everyone want to loll about all morning, and certainly not schlepp 600 yards to a communal bog.
